MISSISSIPPI LEGISLATURE

2022 Regular Session

To: Rules

By: Senator(s) Kirby, Barnett, Butler (38th), Frazier, Simmons (13th)

Senate Concurrent Resolution 516

(As Adopted by Senate and House)

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION RECOGNIZING MARCH 2022 AS "KIDNEY DISEASE AWARENESS MONTH" AND MARCH 10, 2022, AS "WORLD KIDNEY DAY" IN MISSISSIPPI.

WHEREAS, chronic kidney disease (CKD) is the progressive, gradual loss of kidney function which results in a decrease in the ability of the kidneys to remove waste from the body; and

WHEREAS, it is estimated that 37 million adults in the United States have CKD, and of those, approximately 90% remain undiagnosed; and

WHEREAS, without diagnosis and treatment to slow its progression, CKD can progress to end-stage renal failure, which is fatal unless the patient receives dialysis or a kidney transplant; and

WHEREAS, CKD is associated with more severe COVID-19 infections, and COVID-19 may cause acute kidney damage that can lead to dialysis or even death; and

WHEREAS, regular screening and early detection can prevent the progression of kidney disease to kidney failure, and it is essential that awareness of kidney disease and the importance of prevention and early detection be raised; and

WHEREAS, kidney disease awareness empowers patients and families to seek diagnosis, support and appropriate treatment:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby designate the month of March 2022 as "Kidney Disease Awareness Month," and recognize March 10, 2022, as "World Kidney Day" in Mississippi.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be  forwarded to supporters of "Kidney Disease Awareness Month" and "World Kidney Day," and made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
