Senate Bill 2682

AN ACT TO CREATE A BALLOT INITIATIVE REGARDING THE POTENTIAL OF MEDICAID EXPANSION; AND FOR RELATED PURPOSES.

     BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI:

     SECTION 1.  The following nonbinding ballot initiative concerning the potential expansion of Medicaid shall be submitted to the citizens of Mississippi for consideration.  The ballot shall have written or printed thereon the following:

     " [  ]  I support the concept of Medicaid expansion with a work requirement.

       [  ]  I am opposed to the concept of Medicaid expansion in any form."

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this proposed question shall be submitted by the Secretary of State to the qualified electors at an election to be held on the first Tuesday after the first Monday of November 2023, as provided by Section 273 of the Constitution and by general law.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That the explanation of this proposed ballot initiative for the ballot shall read as follows:  "This ballot initiative will serve as a nonbinding poll to gather the general consensus of Mississippi citizens regarding the potential expansion of Medicaid.  Responding to this question shall in no way obligate or bind the Mississippi Legislature to create and or pass legislation in accordance with the predominant or minority opinion that results from the responses to this initiative."

     SECTION 2.  This act shall take effect and be in force from and after July 1, 2023.
