House Resolution 92

(As Adopted by House)

A RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING THE CALLAWAY HIGH SCHOOL CHARGERS BASKETBALL TEAM FOR THEIR OUTSTANDING SEASON AND FOR WINNING THE 2009-2010 STATE CLASS 5A CHAMPIONSHIP AND WINNING BACK-TO-BACK TITLES.

WHEREAS, the Callaway High School Chargers Basketball Team finished the 2009-2010 season with an outstanding record of 23 and 10; and

WHEREAS, being incredibly well-disciplined young men, the Chargers did very well in the 2009-2010 state playoffs; and

WHEREAS, their winning ways continued at the State Class 5A Championship with a thrilling last second 34-32 victory over rival Provine; and

WHEREAS, in order to be the 2010 5A Mississippi High School Activities Association (MHSAA) Basketball Champions and back-to-back title winners, the Chargers had to invest a great deal of additional hard work that began in the early fall months and continued through the late spring; and

WHEREAS, adding to the trophy case, the Chargers have been superbly coached and inspired by Head Coach Wayne Brent and Assistant Coaches Charles Wansley, Louis Wright, Jr., and Brian Anderson, who have broadened the Chargers' knowledge of the game and refined their skills in execution; and

WHEREAS, many of the Chargers will remember the lessons learned through playing for Head Coach Wayne Brent, such as pushing one's body past exhaustion, pain and other obstacles to victory; and

WHEREAS, in the 2009-2010 title game, smothered by two defenders with another headed his way, Callaway High School Chargers boys basketball star guard, Marquavius "Deville" Smith, floated a high-arcing shot from just inside the free-throw line for the game winner with 1.2 seconds remaining in a heart-stopping 34-32 victory over Provine High School on March 7, 2010, for the Class 5A State Championship; and

WHEREAS, the 2010 win gives the Chargers back-to-back gold basketballs; and

WHEREAS, Callaway Coach Wayne Brent knew where he wanted the ball on the decisive play so he needed Smith's heroics after Provine, trailing 28-18 to start the fourth quarter, pulled even at 32-32; and

WHEREAS, the game was the third-lowest scoring MHSAA boys final in more than 50 years and was Callaway's second win in five games against its Jackson Public Schools rival; and

WHEREAS, on March 15, 2010, Class 5A Champion Callaway, 23-10 and ranked No. 7 in The Clarion-Ledger Super 10, went for a second straight MHSAA Grand Slam Title, and the fourth in a row for a Jackson Public Schools boys team; and

WHEREAS, in their tireless dedication, the Chargers have developed a winning and cooperative spirit and a high degree of sportsmanship, and their activities and attitude reflect great credit upon the individual players and their coach and bring honor to Callaway High School; and

WHEREAS, the members of the 2009-2010 Callaway High School Basketball Team are as follows:  Dontarrius Simmons, DéVion Smith, Jarvis Williams, Marcus Williams, Bryan Matlock, Matthew Jacobs, Curtis Clay, Jason Gibson, Corey Young, Malcolm Sanders, Jeverik Nelson, Rakeem Esco, Darius Patrick, Chris Walker, Marquavius "Deville" Smith and Terran Gilmore; and

WHEREAS, it is the policy of the House of Representatives to recognize and commend excellence, especially when evidenced by the youth of our state, who are its future:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby commend and congratulate the Callaway High School Chargers Basketball Team and Head Coach Wayne Brent for their exceptional 2009-2010 season, for winning the State Class 5A MHSAA Championship and extend best wishes for continued success in all of their future athletic endeavors.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Callaway High School, Head Coach Wayne Brent and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
