A RESOLUTION RECOGNIZING THE EXTRAORDINARY SERVICE OF MAJOR LATASHA MCCULLAR AND COMMENDING HER UPON ESTABLISHING THE JOSTEN J. DAY FOUNDATION.

     WHEREAS, after tragically losing her son to the reckless driving of another, Major Latasha McCullar established the Josten J. Day Foundation, which aims to raise awareness of the harmful consequences of reckless driving; and

     WHEREAS, one who has valiantly served in the United States Army for over 20 years, Major McCullar is the proud mother of two children, Josten and Joslyn Day, and in 2018, Josten was tragically killed in an accident caused by a reckless driver who was driving on the wrong side of the road; and

     WHEREAS, as a kind and generous young man who enjoyed his life, his family, and his community, Josten was a junior at Jackson State University, where he was pursuing a degree in physical education and recreation, and he was a joy to know and wanted the best for his family, friends and his community; and

     WHEREAS, reckless driving causes 33% of all deaths which occur due to major car accidents, and to increase awareness of the dire consequences of reckless driving, Major McCullar established the Josten J. Day Foundation in 2018; and 

     WHEREAS, to raise community awareness of this incredible cause, the foundation is sponsoring its inaugural "Reckless Driving Awareness - 5k/10k Virtual Run/Walk/Ride Race," with all proceeds going to the Josten J. Day Annual Scholarship, which

grants $1,000.00 each year to a full-time student at Jackson State University in the Department of Health, Physical Education and Recreation who has a GPA of 2.8 or higher; and

     WHEREAS, remaining true to her call to service, Major McCullar has utilized the same passion, zeal and gusto, which have enabled her to enlist more than 6,000 young Mississippians into the United States Army, to serve as the catalyst to drive the momentum behind the importance of the Josten J. Day Foundation and the fulfillment of its mission to raise awareness about reckless driving and its far reaching implications for all parties involved in related incidents; and

     WHEREAS, it is the policy of the House of Representatives to commend outstanding individuals, especially those such as Major Latasha McCullar, whose service to our nation and whose dedication to raising awareness of the harmful consequences of reckless driving bring honor to her family, her community and to the State of Mississippi, in addition to breathing life into the legacy of greatness that was exuded in Josten's life:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby recognize the extraordinary service of Major Latasha McCullar and commend her upon establishing the Josten J. Day Foundation, and extend best wishes for success in all of her future endeavors.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Major Latasha McCullar and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
