A RESOLUTION COMMENDING THE LIFE AND LEGACY OF MR. WINN BROWN AND EXPRESSING SYMPATHY UPON HIS PASSING.
WHEREAS, "To everything there is a season, and time to every purpose under the Heaven," and as such, the grand architect of the universe, the immaculate author and finisher of our soul's destiny, has summoned the mortal presence of dearly beloved Mr. Winn Brown to eternal rest; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Winn Brown, who was the first Mayor of Horn Lake, Mississippi, passed at the blessed age of 97; and
WHEREAS, he was sworn in as the first mayor shortly after the City of Horn Lake was incorporated in 1973, and also helped found the Horn Lake Fire Department, where he was bestowed the rank of Captain; and
WHEREAS, professionally, he helped establish Brown & Stevens Insurance Company, later Brown Haynes Insurance, now SouthGroup; and
WHEREAS, a native of Bowling Green, Kentucky, he met his future bride, Annie Ruth, at a Methodist conference for college students in 1940; and
WHEREAS, their courtship was short-lived as World War II interrupted, causing Winn to serve in the European Theater of the War in England and North Africa, and he later served in the United States Army Air Corps, now the United States Air Force, where he earned the rank of staff sergeant during World War II; and
WHEREAS, Winn and Annie Ruth married in 1945 at the Horn Lake Methodist Church and remained married for over 70 years until Winn died; and
WHEREAS, to their loving union, three children were born; Winn Brown Jr., Ann Brown Ashcaft, and William A. "Bill" Brown; and
WHEREAS, to cherish his memory, he leaves his wife, his children, six grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, a host of friends and other family; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Brown lived a full life, one in which he personally met Princess Elizabeth (now Queen of England) and was personally blessed by Pope Pius XII; and
WHEREAS, he will be remembered as a fine, Christian Southern gentleman, who put Horn Lake on the map; and
WHEREAS, it is the policy of the House of Representatives to honor the lives of historic figures such as Mr. Winn Brown, who have been positive role models:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby commend the life and legacy of Mr. Winn Brown, and express sympathy upon his passing.
BE IT FURTHERED RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to the family of Mr. Winn Brown and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
