A RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING ALCORN STATE JUNIOR GUARD, KIARA RUFFIN, ON BEING NAMED THE 2010-2011 SWAC WOMEN'S BASKETBALL PLAYER OF THE YEAR.

     WHEREAS, Kiara Ruffin, a junior from Meridian, Mississippi, has been named the 2010-2011 SWAC Women's Basketball Player of the Year by the coaches and sports information directors of the conference; and

     WHEREAS, Kiara Ruffin is the first Alcorn State player to earn SWAC Women's Basketball Player of the Year since Cherea Wood took the honor in 2000-2001; and

     WHEREAS, Ruffin led the team with 3.1 steals per game and ranked first in the league, shooting .422 from beyond the arc; and

     WHEREAS, she also finished second in the conference in free-throw percentage, shooting .800 and was third in the conference with 17.6 points per game; and

     WHEREAS, Kiara Ruffin was named SWAC Player of the Week three times and helped her team finish third in conference standings; and

     WHEREAS, it is the policy of the House of Representatives to recognize and commend excellence especially when evidenced by outstanding accomplishments of our talented youth such as Kiara Ruffin:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby commend and congratulate Kiara Ruffin on being selected as the 2010-2011 SWAC Women's Basketball Player of the Year.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Kiara Ruffin, Alcorn State University and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
