A RESOLUTION COMMENDING THE LIFE, LEGACY AND SERVICE OF MS. FANNIE B. MCCONNELL CLAYTON AND EXPRESSING DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO HER FAMILY AND FRIENDS UPON HER PASSING.

     WHEREAS, Ms. Fannie B. McConnell Clayton, the daughter of Richard and Maria Cotton McConnell, was born October 21, 1908, in Porterville, Mississippi, and departed this earthly life to enter into eternal rest with her Heavenly Father, rendering great sorrow and loss to her family and friends; and

     WHEREAS, having an understanding of the importance of education as a youth, Ms. Clayton excelled in the classroom as a youth and young adult, eventually receiving her higher education from Jackson College, now known as Jackson State University; and

     WHEREAS, a natural nurturer and proponent of learning and development, Ms. Clayton influenced the lives of countless children from elementary to high school for more than 43 years, beginning her career as an educator at Keys Chapel School in Porterville, Mississippi; then teaching at Porterville High School; and ultimately retiring from the profession after instructing at Kemper Elementary School in DeKalb, Mississippi; and

     WHEREAS, Ms. Clayton's passion for children and senior citizens was evident in every aspect of her life, and she was instrumental in encouraging and helping young and old persons in her community, both emotionally and financially; and

     WHEREAS, vested with a rare and quality personality enabled by her compassion for citizens of all ages, Ms. Clayton was rarely afforded the opportunity of meeting a stranger; and

     WHEREAS, Ms. Clayton was steadfast in her zealous commitment to those under her instruction and supervision, and premised her life, career and service on helping raise future leaders and successful citizens; and

     WHEREAS, additionally, Ms. Clayton was involved in many other community and service activities throughout her life, particularly those that addressed the need for social change, as she strived to effectuate positive change through her contributions to the work of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People and the charitable mission of the Order of the Eastern Star; and

     WHEREAS, though she has traversed life's rising and falling rivers of joy and sorrow, triumph and tribulation, success and setbacks, the legacy of her memory and the spirit with which she embraced life will always remain in the hearts and minds of her surviving family and friends; and

     WHEREAS, it is the policy of the House of Representatives to commend the life of such an unsurpassed giving individual as Ms. Clayton, whose life is a testament of service for the betterment of the lives of others:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby commend the life, legacy and service of Ms. Fannie B. McConnell Clayton and express deepest sympathy to her family and friends upon her passing.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to the family of Ms. Clayton and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
