House Resolution 51

A RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING BETHANI GRACE ALMAN FOR WINNING THE TITLE OF MINIATURE MISS MISSISSIPPI.

     WHEREAS, eight-year-old Bethani Grace Alman was crowned Miniature Miss Mississippi in June 2010; and

     WHEREAS, this distinguished award was accompanied with $20,000.00 in college scholarships and the opportunity to travel across the state to promote community involvement and youth empowerment through community service; and

     WHEREAS, this East Rankin Academy third grader is the daughter of Amanda and Buck Alman of Pelahatchie, and the granddaughter of Glenda and Buck Alman, and Dianne and Dwight Varner, all of Rankin County; and

     WHEREAS, an avid Toys for Tots volunteer, she began volunteering with the organization in 2009, and was named one of the 2010 Kohl's Kids Who Care recipients for her work with Toys for Tots; and

     WHEREAS, "Kohl's Kids Who Care" is a program that recognizes and rewards young volunteers, ages 6-18, across the country for their amazing contributions to their community; and

     WHEREAS, in October 2010, Bethani provided her parents with a Christmas list that asked three things:  People to believe in Jesus, kids to believe in Santa, and Santa to have enough toys for every child; and

     WHEREAS, along with this list, she had a vision of a Toys for Tots benefit concert headlined by Mississippi's own Grammy-award winning group, the Williams Brothers; and

     WHEREAS, with a great deal of faith and hard work, her vision became reality on December 14, 2010, when she joined together with the Mississippi Marine Corp, Santa and the Williams Brothers for a benefit concert for Toys for Tots; and

     WHEREAS, this tremendously generous benefit concert resulted in over 850 toys; and

     WHEREAS, impressively, Bethani's independent volunteer endeavors produced over 17,000 toys and $13,000.00; and

     WHEREAS, as a result of all of her incredible voluntary labor of love and sincerity with Toys for Tots, President Barack Obama awarded her the Presidential Community Service Award; and

     WHEREAS, it is the policy of the House of Representatives to recognize and applaud the positive and humanitarian work of Mississippi's young people such as Bethani Alman:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby commend Bethani Grace Alman for winning Miniature Miss Mississippi and recognize her many volunteer efforts.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to the parents and grandparents of Bethani Grace Alman and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
