A RESOLUTION COMMENDING THE LIFE AND LEGACY OF REV. DR. S.L. JOHNSON AND EXPRESSING DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO HIS FAMILY AND FRIENDS UPON HIS PASSING.

     WHEREAS, after living a life dedicated to giving back to the citizens of his community, Rev. Dr. S.L. Johnson departed this earthly life on Thursday, February 11, 2010, to enter into eternal rest with his Heavenly Father in his eternal home, causing a great loss to his family and friends; and

     WHEREAS, Dr. Johnson's faith in our Lord and Savior was not only the guidance of his life, but also the heart and soul of his very existence in this world; and

     WHEREAS, Dr. Johnson was a devoted Christian who acted out his faith by serving as a pastor for most of his adult life; and

     WHEREAS, Dr. Johnson was reared in the Shady Oak M.B. Church of Collins, Mississippi, and was serving in his 36th year as Pastor of Morning Star M.B. Church of Hattiesburg, Mississippi, and was in his 44th year at Mt. Olive M.B. Church of Laurel, Mississippi; and

     WHEREAS, also a former pastor of St. Paul Baptist Church in Seminary, Mississippi, Providence Baptist Church in Collins, Mississippi, and Union Baptist Church in Heidelberg, Mississippi; and

     WHEREAS, Dr. Johnson, was preceded in death by his parents, Roscoe Johnson and Mae Leah Johnson, of Collins, Mississippi, and one brother, L.C. Johnson; and

     WHEREAS, as a strong Christian man, Dr. Johnson was a well-respected man who was a stable force in the community; and

     WHEREAS, Dr. Johnson was married to Jean McIntosh Johnson and after her death, he once again found loving companionship in marrying Mattie Sampson; and

     WHEREAS, as an educator in the Covington County Schools, Dr. Johnson always shared respect and recognition for his accomplishments with his fellow teachers; and

     WHEREAS, a loving father, son, colleague and friend, Dr. Johnson will be sorely missed by those who experienced the strength of his love, dedication and compassion for life; and

     WHEREAS, though he has traversed the river of life to now stand upon golden shores to await his heavenly reward, the legacy of his memory will forever be etched in the hearts and minds of his survivors:  wife, Mattie Sampson Johnson; children, Katrina Smith, Angelia Bolton, Vanessa McDonald-Harris, Sylvia Hyde and Alric Johnson; a host of siblings, grandchildren, step-children, God-children, uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews, other relatives, colleagues and friends; and

     WHEREAS, it is the policy of the House of Representatives to commend the life of such a remarkably wonderful Mississippian, as demonstrated by the life and qualities of Dr. Johnson, whose life was lived without reservation and whose very being was a gift to his community and state:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby commend the life and legacy of Rev. Dr. S.L. Johnson and express deepest sympathy to his family and friends upon his passing.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to the family of Rev. Dr. S.L. Johnson and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
