House Resolution 39
A RESOLUTION DECLARING THE WEEK OF APRIL 19-25, 2015, TO BE NATIONAL OSTEOPATHIC MEDICINE WEEK.
WHEREAS, there are currently more than 104,000 doctors of osteopathic medicine (DOs) and osteopathic medical students in the United States; and
WHEREAS, DOs have made tremendous accomplishments to the American health care system since the profession was founded by Andrew Taylor Still, M.D., D.O., in 1874; and
WHEREAS, having treated and cared for such distinguished individuals as United States presidents and Olympic athletes, DOs have helped to improve the lives of many, contributing to the fight against AIDS and the fight for civil rights; and
WHEREAS, DOs have served on nationwide health care panels, with the hope that the information shared will help improve the lives of countless individuals; and
WHEREAS, DOs are fully-licensed to prescribe medicine and practice in all specialty areas of medicine, including surgery; and
WHEREAS, DOs are trained to consider the health for the whole person, and use their hands to help diagnose and treat their patients from a holistic perspective; and
WHEREAS, Mississippi's 440 osteopathic physicians are dedicated to improving the health of their communities through education and awareness-based efforts, as well as by delivering quality health services; and
WHEREAS, the citizens of Mississippi recognize the need for osteopathic physicians who are committed to bringing attention to improving the health of Americans, regardless of age, income level or ethnicity; and
WHEREAS, it is the policy of the House of Representatives to recognize distinguished professionals who improve the lives of the people of this state with their knowledge of health and wellness:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby declare the week of April 19-25, 2015, to be National Osteopathic Medicine Week, and urge all citizens and community organizations to support this observance by helping to educate residents about DOs and osteopathic medicine.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
