House Resolution 21

(As Adopted by House)

A RESOLUTION MOURNING THE LOSS AND COMMEMORATING THE LIFE AND LEGACY OF DR. JOSEPHINE POSEY.

WHEREAS, it is written in Ecclesiastes 3:1 that "To everything there is a season, and a time for every purpose under the Heaven," and as such, on January 15, 2020, the immaculate author and finisher of our soul's destiny summoned the mortal presence of dearly beloved, Dr. Josephine Posey, to eternal rest, rendering great sorrow and loss to her family and friends; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Posey's community lost a wonderful friend with her passing, and there is now a hush in our hearts as we come together to pay our respects to the memory of one who has been called to join that innumerable heavenly caravan; and

WHEREAS, born in Collins, Mississippi, Dr. Posey graduated from high school in 1966, at the age of 16, attended Alcorn State University, where she graduated in 1970, and signed her first teaching contract at the age of 19; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Posey worked in the Yazoo, Covington and Washington County Public School Systems before working at Mississippi Valley State University, Mississippi State University and Alcorn State University; and

WHEREAS, dedicated to academic excellence, by furthering her education, Dr. Posey attended Mississippi State University, where she earned a master's degree in 1976, an educational specialist degree in 1978, and a doctor of education in 1983; and

WHEREAS, after returning to her alma mater, Dr. Posey became an administrator and was the first female to serve as the Dean of Alcorn's School of Education and Psychology in 1984, and in 2007, she was appointed as interim vice president for academic affairs and spent time as the special assistant to the president, professor, and department chairperson at Alcorn; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Posey was also Alcorn's historian for over 30 years, chronicling the institution's challenges, contributions and successes in three books: "Succeeding Against Great Odds: Alcorn State University in its Second Century," "Against Great Odds: The History of Alcorn State University" and "Alcorn State University and the National Alumni Association"; and

WHEREAS, as a respected and recognizable Alcorn icon, Dr. Posey was a treasured and hard working Alcornite who was committed to the betterment of the university, and with her genuine personality and exquisite humbleness, she made a difference in the lives of many, and all who knew her will truly miss her; and

WHEREAS, devoted to her family, Dr. Posey was married to Mr. Curtis Leon Posey, and they were blessed with one son, Mr. Carlos LeNard Posey and several grandchildren; and

WHEREAS, though she has traversed the river of life to reunite with those who answered God's summons to life eternal and now beckon her arrival to the celestial shores of Heaven's grandeur, the legacy of Dr. Posey's indelible imprint upon our lives will continue to refresh the hearts and fond memories of her loved ones and dear friends; and

WHEREAS, because it is written in II Corinthians 5:8, that to be "absent from the body is to be present with the Lord," Dr. Posey's family and friends can find peace and comfort during this difficult time; and

WHEREAS, it is the policy of the House of Representatives to recognize and commend the lives of outstanding individuals, especially those such as Dr. Josephine Posey, who certainly inspired everyone she knew and whose life's light illuminated the path of hope for all she encountered along her earthly sojourn:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby mourn the loss and commemorate the life and legacy of Dr. Josephine Posey, and express sincere and deepest sympathy to her family and friends upon her passing.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to the family of Dr. Josephine Posey and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
