House Resolution 20
A RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING THE BAY HIGH STEPPERS UPON WINNING THEIR SEVENTH CONSECUTIVE MISSISSIPPI HIGH SCHOOL ACTIVITIES ASSOCIATION STATE CHAMPIONSHIP TITLE.
WHEREAS, the Bay High Steppers had the mindset of champions, as they entered the Mississippi High School Activities Association Jazz and Kick Performance Championship on December 18, 2015, and that attitude paid off when they walked out with their seventh consecutive state title; and
WHEREAS, these young women trained a lifetime for this opportunity by taking dance lessons at an early age through the outstanding studios in the area; and
WHEREAS, with tremendous focus and preparation, the girls entered the competition with impeccable timing to a strict schedule, from rehearsing in the parking lot the night before to perfecting the routine precision in the amount of time they had to complete each portion of their choreography at the arena and they were always ready; and
WHEREAS, with the year being filled with adversity, the leadership of the team changed in August with a two-month substitute coach, but Angie Favre becoming Head Coach, lived up to their legacy by continuing to make the Bay High Steppers known throughout the prep dance community, and never allowing them to abandon their competitive spirit; and
WHEREAS, misfortune continued to plague the team at competition when Coach Favre realized they did not have their music so she substituted a slower version without telling the team, but with their drive and talent, the Bay High Steppers did not falter and won the 2015 State Championship in the Kick Division in a fashion indicative of the true commitment to their skill and ability to acclimate to unfortunate circumstances with courage under fire and with the heart of lions; and
WHEREAS, the leadership of Captain Madelynn Garza and Co-Captains Shelby Furr and Jillian Seymour eased the change of coaches by holding the team together through this emotional and difficult journey; and
WHEREAS, while Captain Garza in particular, had experienced a championship win for three years building on the legacy of three wins before she joined the team, the idea of going to competition after so much change was implausible; and
WHEREAS, the Bay High Steppers, nevertheless, decided to advance toward competition with less than two months to prepare, and with intense dedication, they practiced every day at school, often on Sunday and many days after school; and
WHEREAS, these amazing young women are superior athletes by any standard, every practice consisted of 15 minutes of stretching followed by 90 minutes of dancing, leaping and turning, which was truly an incredible cardio workout; and
WHEREAS, in addition to the massive athletic feats these ladies achieved every day, they still made time to support Bay High School with their talents, dancing at every pep rally and football game as a vital part of the Bay High School Marching Band; and
WHEREAS, the Steppers were not alone working hard to achieve the goal of a seventh championship, Coach Favre watched the videos continuously, every night, to make notes for her dancers, so much so that even her young daughters knew the dance by heart; and
WHEREAS, when the results were announced, a feeling of tremendous relief was felt throughout the team, coach and parents, knowing that all of the hard work paid off in a big way, with a first place in Kick, for the seventh consecutive season and second place in Jazz, a truly amazing accomplishment; and
WHEREAS, this year's victory by the Bay High Steppers in ground-breaking fashion makes them the only dance team in Mississippi to win this many consecutive state championships, but that is not their only area of excellence, with a focus on grades, every Stepper is also a Mississippi High School Activities Association Scholar Athlete; and
WHEREAS, it is the policy of the House of Representatives to recognize and commend excellence, especially when evidenced by the youth of our state, who are its future:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby commend and congratulate the Bay High Steppers and Head Coach Angie Favre upon the seventh consecutive Mississippi High School Activities Association State Championship in the Kick Division, and extend best wishes for continued success in all of their future athletic and academic endeavors.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Bay High School, Coach Angie Favre and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
