House Resolution 144

(As Adopted by House)

A RESOLUTION COMMENDING THE LIFE, LEGACY AND BRAVE FEAT OF HEROISM OF BOBBY O'QUINN AND EXPRESSING DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO HIS FAMILY AND FRIENDS UPON HIS PASSING.

WHEREAS, in what proved to be a daring act of bravery and heroic effort, 19-year-old Bobby O'Quinn gave his life for the life of another, as he departed this earthly life on Saturday, April 2, 2011, to enter into eternal rest with his Heavenly Father, rendering great sorrow and loss to his family and friends; and

WHEREAS, a star athlete during his prep years at Franklin County High School, which was carried over to his gridiron success at Copiah-Lincoln Community College as a defensive lineman, O'Quinn was the quintessential depiction of courage and selflessness, as he never backed down from any challenge and was swift to put the needs of others before his own; and

WHEREAS, in his act of gallantry, which saved the life of a seven-year-old twin, and before succumbing to the perils of his heroism as he continued in his attempt to rescue a second victim at Lake Okhissa at the Homochitto State Park in Bude, Bobby, without fear and trepidation sacrificed his life for that of another; and

WHEREAS, commensurate with his noble gesture of self-sacrifice, Bobby's athletic talents were noted throughout the state when he was named to the All-State Team his sophomore and junior seasons in high school, was a starting defensive tackle on the Co-Lin football team as a freshman in 2010, and was one of the top junior college recruits heading into his sophomore season at Co-Lin; and

WHEREAS, the valiance of such a caring individual is to be commended as this guardian and protector of life has now traversed the river of life to now stand upon the golden heavenly shores in anticipation of receipt of a servant's reward; and

WHEREAS, it is the policy of the House of Representatives to commend the life of such a remarkably selfless individual as Bobby O'Quinn, whose life was prematurely extinguished, but whose impact is far-reaching and exemplary of valor and humility, which is representative of Christ's care and redemption of the world:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby commend the life, legacy and brave feat of heroism of Bobby O'Quinn in the sacrifice of his life for the life of another and express deepest sympathy to his family and friends upon his passing.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to the family of Bobby O'Quinn, Franklin County High School, Copiah-Lincoln Community College and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
