A RESOLUTION RECOGNIZING AND COMMENDING MR. CAYCE DEPOYSTER FOR PROVIDING 34 YEARS OF EXCEPTIONAL SERVICE TO THE STUDENTS IN PRENTISS COUNTY, MISSISSIPPI.

     WHEREAS, an advocate for education, Mr. Cayce DePoyster dedicated 34 years of his life to teaching the citizens of Prentiss County, Mississippi, the necessary lessons, calculations and skills to ensure their knowledge and prosperity beyond the classroom; and

     WHEREAS, born in 1931 in Leedy, Mississippi, Mr. DePoyster, attended the small community schools of Gravel Hill, Love Joy and Glen, which are located in Tishomingo and Alcorn Counties; and

     WHEREAS, upon his graduation from high school, Mr. DePoyster joined the National Guard and patriotically served his country for two years in the Korean War; and 

     WHEREAS, after returning home, Mr. DePoyster purchased Hobo Station Grocery and utilized the experience he gained while working in his father's grocery business to operate the new business with his wife, Reba; and

     WHEREAS, consumed with an unquenchable thirst for knowledge, Mr. DePoyster attended Northeast Mississippi Community College, Mississippi State University and the University of Mississippi, receiving bachelor, master and specialist degrees in education and administration; and 

     WHEREAS, Mr. DePoyster began his educational career as a social studies teacher at Holcut, and when he moved to Hill's Chapel, he taught social studies and coached basketball for two years before becoming principal; and

     WHEREAS, during his tenure as the principal at Hill's Chapel, Mr. DePoyster tirelessly strived for 27 years to make Hill's Chapel the best school in Prentiss County, and because he knew that improvements to the learning environment would increase the students' ability to listen, study and retain information, he facilitated numerous improvements, including:  providing the teachers with updated equipment and teaching aids; upgrading and expanding the school facilities; and assisting Hill's Chapel in becoming the first school in the area to become completely air-conditioned; and

     WHEREAS, as the principal of Hill's Chapel, Mr. DePoyster influenced the lives of many prominent Mississippians, including State Representative Tracy Arnold, who credits his success and integrity to the positive impact his beloved principal, Mr. DePoyster, had on his life; and 

     WHEREAS, despite his retirement in 1986, Prentiss County needed Mr. DePoyster's brilliant mind, so in 1988, he was asked to return as the Director of Staff Development and Curriculum at the County Office, where he dedicated his time and knowledge of education and administration until 1992; and 

     WHEREAS, for 34 years of his life, Mr. DePoyster encouraged students, young and old, to achieve their utmost in education, which is a true testament to his belief that an intelligent society will lead to a brighter future for all Mississippians; and

     WHEREAS, it is most fitting that the House of Representatives recognize and commend outstanding Mississippians such as Mr. Cayce DePoyster, whose superb leadership and instruction for 34 years as an educator in Prentiss County has bettered the lives of the citizens of our great Magnolia State:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby recognize and commend Mr. Cayce DePoyster for providing 34 years of exceptional service to the students in Prentiss County, Mississippi, and extend most sincere wishes for continued success in all of his future endeavors.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Mr. Cayce DePoyster and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
