A RESOLUTION COMMENDING DR. EDDIE A. HOLLOWAY FOR HIS OUTSTANDING SERVICE AND UPON THE OCCASION OF HIS RETIREMENT AS DEAN OF STUDENTS FOR THE UNIVERSITY OF SOUTHERN MISSISSIPPI.

     WHEREAS, as a lifelong resident of Hattiesburg, Mississippi, Dr. Eddie A. Holloway has dedicated his life to serving his community, and he leaves a lasting legacy upon the occasion of his retirement as Dean of Students for the University of Southern Mississippi; and

     WHEREAS, Dr. Holloway earned a bachelor of science degree in sociology and personnel management, a master of science degree in community counseling, a master of science degree in public health education, and a doctorate in educational administration from the University of Southern Mississippi; and

     WHEREAS, highly active in higher education and student affairs for nearly 36 years, Dr. Holloway has been committed to promoting involvement, academic success and personal and professional development, and he has extensive teaching experience in the areas of sociology, psychology, student personnel and educational leadership; and 

     WHEREAS, committed to creating a community of scholars who are equipped with big hearts to serve others, during his tenure as Dean of Students, Dr. Holloway has been continuously engaged in strategic planning, leadership and management development and training, student recruitment and retention-agent training, risk and liability assessment, crisis management, student activity, diversity management and conflict resolution; and 

     WHEREAS, as a dedicated community leader, Dr. Holloway was elected to Hattiesburg's first city council, a position he held for 16 consecutive years, representing the interests of Ward 2 residents and the citizens at large, and during his time as city councilman he served as council president and council vice president, presiding over council meetings and serving as liaison between the administration, council membership and various constituency groups; and

     WHEREAS, Dr. Holloway began his professional career working in the area of substance abuse treatment as well as youth court services, and before becoming dean, he was a counselor for the University Counseling Center and taught psychology courses; and

     WHEREAS, as Dean of Students and assistant professor of psychology at the University of Southern Mississippi, Dr. Holloway has supervisory responsibilities of University Police, Greek Life, Office of Disability Accommodations, the Student Counseling Center, Parking Management, the Student Government Association, the Office of Minority Affairs, Student Oriented Services, Campus Judicial Services, the Southern Miss CARES program,

which serves students with special needs and circumstances, Student Discipline and the Critical Incident Response Team; and 

     WHEREAS, tremendously involved in his community, Dr. Holloway served in various capacities in numerous organizations, including: the Leadership Training Council of the National League of Cities,  the Mississippi Association of Chief Student Affairs Administrators, the National Association of Student Personnel Affairs Administrators, the Association for Student Judicial Affairs, the International Association of Campus Law Enforcement Administrators, and Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.; and

     WHEREAS, in addition, Dr. Holloway is a member of the board of directors for Bancorp South and the Wesley Medical Center, serves on the advisory councils for the American Red Cross and Salvation Army Boys and Girls Club and is a charter member of the Hattiesburg Public School District's Foundation; and

     WHEREAS, respected by both colleagues and superiors, Dr. Holloway was recently appointed to the Mississippi Civil Rights Commission and the Mississippi Coalition Against Sexual Assault, and he is a co-founder of the Hattiesburg Leaders for a New Century and the Pinebelt Boys and Girls Club; and

     WHEREAS, with his incredible abilities, expertise and talent, Dr. Holloway is a leadership consultant and principal trainer with Holloway and Associates, which is comprised of professional training consultants in management, leadership and personal development, providing a wide array of professional services that are designed to promote, enlighten, educate, offering insightful and motivating strategies for leaders and managers in public service and business; and

     WHEREAS, as a man of incredible character and superb stature, Dr. Holloway has received many honors and awards, including:  the Outstanding Mississippian Award presented by the Jaycees in 1989, the Afro-American Student Organization's Outstanding Citizen Award in 2000, and the Juneteenth Committee Humanitarian Award in 2000; and he was an honorary inductee of the Golden Key Club in 1998, was a 2004 inductee into the University of Southern Mississippi Hall of Fame and a 2009 inductee into the Student Activities Hall of Fame; and he was honored as the Mississippi State Institutions of Higher Learning Board of Trustees Black History Month Educator of the Year and the Administrator of the Year by the University of Southern Mississippi's Chapter of Association of Office Professionals in 2009; and 

     WHEREAS, outside of his professional responsibilities, Dr. Holloway and his wife Sarah are the parents of two daughters, Leslie and Sommer, both graduates of the University of Southern Mississippi; and

     WHEREAS, it is the policy of the House of Representatives to honor and commend outstanding Mississippians, especially those such as Dr. Eddie A. Holloway, whose unparalleled service, dauntless fortitude and remarkable dedication to the University of Southern Mississippi and the Hattiesburg community brings honor to his city, his university and the State of Mississippi:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby commend Dr. Eddie A. Holloway upon the occasion of his retirement as Dean of Students for the University of Southern Mississippi.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Dr. Eddie A. Holloway and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
