A RESOLUTION COMMENDING MR. WOODY BARNETT, ATHLETIC DIRECTOR AND HEAD TRACK COACH OF PEARL HIGH SCHOOL, FOR BEING AWARDED THE 2011 STATE ATHLETIC DIRECTOR OF THE YEAR AND BOYS TRACK COACH OF THE YEAR.

     WHEREAS, Mr. Woody Barnett, the Head Track Coach and Athletic Director of Pearl High School, has received two distinguished honors from the Mississippi Association of Coaches; the 2011 State Athletic Director of the Year and the Boys Track Coach of the Year; and

     WHEREAS, the Pearl High School Pirate track team had a remarkable year, they went undefeated, won the Class 5A state championship, took first place at the University of Southern Mississippi Invitational, the Sugar Bowl Classic in New Orleans, and the Mississippi State University Bulldog Invitational, which were track meets that featured some of the top teams in Mississippi, Alabama and Louisiana; and

     WHEREAS, Coach Barnett has worked tirelessly with the Pearl Public School Distict for a total of 34 years, served as the head coach of the track and cross-country teams for 33 years and athletic director for 14 years; and

     WHEREAS, in his 33 years as head coach, his boys and girls cross country and track teams have won a remarkable 42 state championships and finished second place 33 times in championships; and

     WHEREAS, throughout his career, Coach Barnett has received numerous awards, the Mississippi Association of Coaches has selected him as its track or cross-country coach of the year eight times and in 2008, inducted him into its Coaches Hall of Fame, the National Federation of High Schools Coaches Association and its successor organizations named him state coach of the year five times, regional coach of the year twice, national coach of the year once and in 2011, the Southeast Region Gill Athletics Track and Field Coach of the Year; and

     WHEREAS, Coach Barnett credits the Pearl Public School District administrators, school board members and the parents within the district with providing the necessary support for the district to be successful in academics and in extracurricular activities; and

     WHEREAS, it is the policy of the House of Representatives to honor outstanding Mississippi public high school coaches, such as Coach Woody Barnett, who work hard to lead their students and school to victory both on and off the field:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby commend Coach Woody Barnett upon being awarded the 2011 State Athletic Director of the Year and Boys Track Coach of the Year by the Mississippi Association of Coaches.
