A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING THE IMPECCABLE CAREER ACCOMPLISHMENTS OF BASKETBALL GREAT, GERALD GLASS, OF GREENWOOD, MISSISSIPPI.

     WHEREAS, Gerald Glass of Greenwood, Mississippi, is a former standout basketball player at Delta State University in Cleveland, Mississippi, and at the University of Mississippi in Oxford, Mississippi, a former professional basketball player for the National Basketball Association, and the current head coach for the Amanda Elzy High School Boys' Panthers Basketball Team; and

     WHEREAS, the oldest child of Bishop Milton and Rosie Archie Glass of Greenwood, Mr. Glass, dubbed "World Class Glass" by his high school basketball teammates, graduated from Amanda Elzy High School in 1985, and received an athletic scholarship to attend Delta State, where he led the team to the Division II Final Four in 1987, averaging 26 points per game; and

     WHEREAS, while at Delta State, Mr. Glass received the honor as being named the Gulf South Conference Player of the Week numerous times, as well as receiving the honor of 1986 Freshman of the Year; and

     WHEREAS, Mr. Glass followed his recruiting coach from Delta State to Ole Miss in 1987, and after sitting out for a season to improve upon his physical strength and basketball skills, he took to the court and began his prolific Division I college basketball career as a Rebel; and

     WHEREAS, in 1989, history was made on the basketball court in the memorable shootout between Mr. Glass and Louisiana State University standout, Chris Jackson, when Mr. Glass led the scoring for the Rebels with an astonishing 53 points, giving Ole Miss the victory over the Tigers with a final score of 113-112; and

     WHEREAS, during his senior year, Mr. Glass led his Ole Miss Rebels to the Southeastern Conference Championship Tournament Finals before leaving college early to enter the National Basketball Association's draft; and

     WHEREAS, in the 1990 NBA draft, the small-town basketball star from Greenwood was drafted by the Minnesota Timberwolves as the twentieth pick in the first round, and after playing for the Timberwolves for two seasons, Mr. Glass took his talents to Detroit in 1993 to play for the mighty Pistons; and

     WHEREAS, as a NBA great, Mr. Glass also shared his basketball talents with the New Jersey Nets and the Charlotte Hornets, and he also played in the Continental Basketball Association for Golden State for one year before taking the opportunity of a lifetime to play professional basketball overseas in Israel, Spain and Italy; and

     WHEREAS, after his career as a professional basketball player, Mr. Glass returned home to Greenwood to coach at his alma mater, Amanda Elzy High School, taking over as head coach from his own high school basketball coach, Howard Brown; and

     WHEREAS, having been in the spotlight on some of the world's most notable hardwood courts, Mr. Glass is an inspiration to the young men of his team, and proof that hard work, a fighting spirit and dedication to improving and refining one's talents can make the dreams of any young person possible; and

     WHEREAS, as Coach Glass, he has taken the Panthers to remarkable heights, leading the team to the District 3-4A North Tournament in his first season as head coach, and to the Mississippi High School Activities Association (MHSAA) semi-finals in his second season; and

     WHEREAS, most recently, Coach Glass led his team to the MHSAA state championship game, and his Panthers emerged victorious with a final score of 56-47 over the Warriors of Corinth High School, a team that had defeated Amanda Elzy earlier in the season; and

     WHEREAS, Mr. Glass' incredible accomplishments began as a basketball star and now lay in his greatest achievements, his wife, Annie, and their sons, Gerald, Jr., and Jalen, both of whom are certain to follow in their father's footsteps to greatness; and

     WHEREAS, it is the policy of this Legislature to honor the accomplishments and achievements of Mississippi's native sons, such as Mr. Glass, who scale the echelon of success and provide an impassioned zeal and enduring commitment to the service of the youth of our state, who are its future:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE SENATE CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend and congratulate the stellar career of Gerald Glass, basketball legend and dedicated father, coach, mentor and friend, and extend best wishes to him for success in all of his future endeavors.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Mr. Glass and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
