MISSISSIPPI LEGISLATURE
2011 Regular Session
To: Rules
By: Representatives Baker (8th), Hamilton (6th), Jennings, Mayhall, Nicholson, Woods
House Concurrent Resolution 73
(As Adopted by House and Senate)
A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION RECOGNIZING THE TOWN OF SENATOBIA, MISSISSIPPI, AS ONE OF BUSINESSWEEK'S "BEST PLACES IN AMERICA TO RAISE KIDS."
WHEREAS, Bloomberg Businessweek magazine confirmed what Senatobia residents have known all along, that the town is a great place to live and raise kids; and
WHEREAS, Senatobia was the Mississippi winner in Businessweek's "Best Places in America to Raise Kids" in its fifth annual ranking of "Best Places to Raise Kids," using 2010 data to evaluate a total of 5,418 locations nationwide with populations larger than the state median but no larger than 50,000, where the median income is within 20 percent of the state's median; and
WHEREAS, no matter how hard you try, raising a family is complicated, not to mention expensive, with parents tasked with juggling concerns about their children's safety, schools, expenses, and after-school activities and who also need to go to work; and
WHEREAS, although living in the right place will not solve all problems and concerns that weigh heavily on parents, it can, however, offer their children more opportunities and enhance the family's lifestyle; and
WHEREAS, the rankings put the most weight on school performance, the number of schools, crime statistics and cost of living, as well as other factors, including: job growth, air quality, ethnic diversity and access to recreational amenities within the county, such as parks, zoos, theaters and museums; and WHEREAS, situated along Mississippi's northern I-55 corridor, Senatobia, a distant suburb of Memphis, Tennessee, is known as the "Five Star City," home to great schools and the campus of Northwest Mississippi Community College; and
WHEREAS, founded in 1860, the town is near the recreational opportunities of two large lakes constructed using dams after disastrous floods in the area: Arkabutla Lake on the Coldwater River and Sardis Lake on the Tallahatchie River; and
WHEREAS, the places selected were neither rich suburbs nor havens for luxury living, rather, these are communities inhabited mostly by middle-income earners that have good public schools, low crime, and resources to keep the family entertained on weekends; and
WHEREAS, Senatobia, with a population of 6,807 according to the latest United States census data, edged out Belmont for top rankings in Mississippi, while Tinley Park, Illinois, was the overall winner; and
WHEREAS, it is the policy of this Legislature to commend and recognize citizens of communities such as the Senatobia community for being honored as Mississippi's best and one of America's best, affordable places for family life, which are part of the fabric of the State of Mississippi:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE SENATE CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby recognize the Town of Senatobia, Mississippi, as one of Businessweek's "Best Places in America to Raise Kids" and extend congratulations to the citizens of this community for this designation.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to the Mayor and Board of Aldermen of the Town of Senatobia, the Board of Supervisors of Tate County, the Executive Director of Tate County Economic Development and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
