A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING THE LIFE AND LEGACY OF DR. GRANT ALAN DUNGEE, III, AND EXPRESSING DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO HIS FAMILY, COLLEAGUES AND FRIENDS UPON HIS PASSING.
WHEREAS, "To everything there is a season, and time to every purpose under the heaven," and as such, the grand architect of the universe, the immaculate author and finisher of our soul's destiny, has summoned the mortal presence of dearly beloved, legendary Coach Grant Alan Dungee, III, to eternal rest, as he has made life's final transition from earthly travailing to heavenly reward, rendering great sorrow and loss to his family, colleagues and friends; and
WHEREAS, born in Washington, D.C., on December 23, 1930, Dr. Dungee received his elementary and secondary education in the Chicago Public School System before attending Kentucky State University where he obtained a bachelor of science degree in health and physical education, and subsequently earned his master of science, specialist and doctoral degrees in health and safety from Indiana University; and
WHEREAS, with an illustrious career that spanned over 50 years, Dr. Dungee's professional employment endeavors include a 32-year tenure at Alcorn State University from 1957-1989, where he served as head track and cross-country coach, football scout and assistant coach for the duration of his employment, and served as chair and professor of health and physical education from 1964-1989; and
WHEREAS, upon his 1989 retirement from Alcorn, Dr. Dungee accepted employment at Albany State University where he served as head women's track coach and associate professor of health and physical education until his second retirement in 2004; and
WHEREAS, in addition to his significant international coaching experiences, Dr. Dungee coached four world record holders, two Olympic Team selections, 128 All-Conference Selections, 26 All-Americans, 12 United States International Team Selections, one gold medalist, five consecutive SCAC track and field championship teams from 1959-1963, and the SIAC women's track and field championship team in 1997; and
WHEREAS, evidentiary of his remarkable skill in athletic administration, he was the recipient of many honors and awards, including: the Indiana University Academic Achievement Award, Kentucky State University Hall of Fame, SCAC Track Coach of the Year, SIAC Women's Coach of the Year, Alcorn State University National Alumni Appreciation Award, United States Olympic Committee (USOC) Training Consultant, Albany State University National Alumni Association Appreciation Award, National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Area 5 Coach of the Year, captain of the football team and four-year letterman in football and track at Kentucky State, member of the United States Olympic Committee, guest lecturer-NAIA National Meeting, consultant for more than 25 Southern Association and State Accrediting Committees, Alcorn State University Hall of Fame and the SWAC Lifetime Achievement Award; and
WHEREAS, an individual devoted to the service of mankind, Dr. Dungee shared professional and civic affiliations with: Phi
Epsilon Kappa, Phi Delta Kappa, Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., Kentana (senior men's honor society-Kentucky State), National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance, Mississippi Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance, and American Association of University Professors; and
WHEREAS, though he has traversed the river of life to now stand upon heaven's celestial shores to reunite with the kindred souls of loved ones departing beforehand, including three sons, Grant IV, Steven and Bruce, the legacy of his endearing memory continues to thrive in the lives of those who experienced the monumental joys of his life, including: his wife, Darlene; children, Gwendolyn and Deidra; grandchildren, Taylor, Toni, Caitlyn, Hailey, Chalsey and Jace; and a host of other relatives and friends; and
WHEREAS, it is the policy of this Legislature to acknowledge the selfless humanitarianism and academic contributions of an individual such as Dr. Dungee, whose esteemed caliber of public service was exemplified by fairness and sound judgment:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE SENATE CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby mourn the loss and commemorate the life and legacy of service of Dr. Grant Alan Dungee, III, and extend sincere and deepest sympathy to his family, colleagues and friends upon his passing.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to the family of Dr. Dungee and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
