A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION RECOGNIZING THE CONTRIBUTIONS OF THE AMERICAN HEART ASSOCIATION'S GO RED FOR WOMEN MOVEMENT AND THE IMPORTANCE OF THE ONGOING FIGHT AGAINST HEART DISEASE AND STROKE AND ACKNOWLEDGING FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 3, 2017, AS OBSERVANCE OF NATIONAL WEAR RED DAY IN THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI.
WHEREAS, tragically, cardiovascular diseases kill one in three women in the United States each year, yet eighty percent of cardiovascular diseases may be prevented; and
WHEREAS, cardiovascular diseases and stroke kill one woman every 80 seconds in the United States, and an estimated 44 million women in the United States are affected by cardiovascular diseases; and
WHEREAS, ninety percent of women have one or more risk factors for developing heart disease or stroke; and
WHEREAS, women are less likely to call 911 for themselves when experiencing symptoms of a heart attack than they are if someone else were having a heart attack; and
WHEREAS, only thirty-six percent of African-American women and thirty-four percent of Hispanic women know that heart disease is their greatest health risk, compared with sixty-five percent of Caucasian women; and
WHEREAS, the American Heart Association's Go Red For Women movement motivates women to learn their family history and to meet with a healthcare provider to determine their risk for cardiovascular diseases and stroke; and
WHEREAS, women involved with the Go Red For Women movement live healthier lives; and
WHEREAS, Go Red For Women encourages women to take control of their heart health by knowing and managing these five numbers:
(1) Total Cholesterol;
(2) HDL (good) Cholesterol;
(3) Blood Pressure;
(4) Blood Sugar; and
(5) Body Mass Index (BMI)
WHEREAS, it is the policy of this Legislature to acknowledge such organizations as the American Heart Association and its Go Red For Women movement, which tirelessly advocate for quality healthcare and awareness for this state's citizens:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE SENATE CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby recognize the contributions of the American Heart Association's Go Red For Women movement and the importance of the ongoing fight against heart disease and stroke and acknowledge Friday, February 3, 2017, as observance of National Wear Red Day in the State of Mississippi, urging all citizens to show their support for women and the fight against heart disease by commemorating this day by wearing the color red. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, THAT THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE SENATE CONCURRING THEREIN:
(1) Supports the goals and ideals of "American Heart Month" and "National Wear Red Day"; and
(2) Recognizes that by increasing awareness, speaking out about heart disease, and empowering women to reduce their risk for
cardiovascular diseases, we can save thousands of lives each year;
(3) Commends the efforts of all political subdivisions of this state, nonprofit organizations, businesses and other entities, the Mississippi citizenry who support "American Heart Month" and "National Wear Red Day"; and
(4) Encourages all individuals, especially women, in the State of Mississippi to become informed of their individual risks for heart disease.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to the Mississippi Chapter of the American Heart Association and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
