House Concurrent Resolution 51

(As Adopted by House and Senate)

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING THE PEARL HIGH SCHOOL PIRATE MARCHING BAND UNDER THE DIRECTION OF JEFF CANNON UPON WINNING THE MISSISSIPPI HIGH SCHOOL ACTIVITIES ASSOCIATION AND MISSISSIPPI BAND ASSOCIATION 2009 CLASS 5A STATE CHAMPIONSHIP.

WHEREAS, on Saturday, October 24, 2009, the Pearl High School Pirate Marching Band was awarded First Place honors in the Mississippi High School Activities Association/Mississippi Band Association 2009 Class 5A State Marching Band Championship; and

WHEREAS, this outstanding band of 160 members won the State 5A Marching Band Championship with a tantalizing and show-stopping performance of their program, a dynamic rendition and interpretation of poised formation and melodic song based on the opera, "Carmen"; and

WHEREAS, it is customary in competitions of this nature that the margin that separates the victor from runners-up is only within tenths of a point in separation; however, this year's Pirate title was remarkably decisive with a score of 91.475 points, which was 4.125 points more than second place finisher, Long Beach; and

WHEREAS, ranking first in music, visual, general effect and color guard, four of the five adjudicated categories, the band's percussion unit was ranked second, which showcases the band's long, rich history in musical excellence as evidenced by this state title; and

WHEREAS, the Pirate Band has been superbly instructed and directed by third-year Director Jeff Cannon, who has broadened the members' knowledge of music and refined their skills in execution, and who attributes the band's win to the effort and long hours of hard work by the students and the overwhelming support from the community, parents and school district administrators; and

WHEREAS, with a motto of "Excellence Through Perseverance," these students have persevered to achieve the highest honor attainable within the two associations' honors and awards, and they have remained consistent in dedicating each of their performances to the Lord; and

WHEREAS, the Pirate Band has developed a winning and cooperative spirit and superb degree of sportsmanship, and their activities and attitudes reflect great credit upon the individual members, their directors and parents and bring honor to Pearl High School; and

WHEREAS, it is with great pride that this Legislature recognizes the special accomplishments of this outstanding group of student musicians, who have brought honor to their school, their parents, their community and to the State of Mississippi:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE SENATE CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend and congratulate the Pearl High School Pirate Marching Band and its directors upon winning the 2009 Class 5A State Marching Band Championship and extend best wishes for continued success in all of their future musical and academic endeavors.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Mr. Jeff Cannon, Principal Raymond Morgigno, the Pearl School District Board of Trustees and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
