A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION RECOGNIZING AND COMMENDING THE TOWN OF TERRY, MISSISSIPPI, UPON THE OCCASION OF ITS 150TH ANNIVERSARY, AND EXPRESSING SINCERE WISHES FOR CONTINUED SUCCESS AND PROSPERITY IN THE FUTURE.

     WHEREAS, incorporated in 1867, this year will mark the grand occasion of the 150th anniversary of the Town of Terry, Mississippi, celebrating over a century of community cohesion and shared prosperity; and

     WHEREAS, located eight miles southwest of Byram, Terry, formerly known as New Town, was established in 1856 and was incorporated after a railroad was built through the area, signaling a new era of growth for the small town; and

     WHEREAS, New Town was settled in 1811 when a caravan of settlers from Virginia came south to Mississippi to make their homes, including Mary Stovall, who had six hundred descendants at the time of her death, in addition to the Pleasant, Brown, Harvey and Ratcliff families; and

     WHEREAS, Terry was named after W.D. (Will) Terry who donated land for the town site with the provision that it be named after him, and he also gave land for the school and churches to be built on; and

     WHEREAS, for a number of years, Terry was home to the 14th Governor of Mississippi, Governor Albert Gallatin Brown, who was instrumental in the establishment of public education and mental health treatment, and as a token of appreciation, Brown Street in Terry is named in his honor; and

     WHEREAS, over the past 150 years, the Town of Terry has continued to develop and prosper, as evidenced by its extraordinary population growth in recent history; and

     WHEREAS, Terry has been recognized as an excellent place to make a living and raise a family, and this reputation will undoubtedly continue for the next 150 years; and

     WHEREAS, the citizens of the Town of Terry recognize and cherish the rich history of their town, its land, buildings, monuments and the many contributions its people have bestowed upon the progress of our country, state and nation and wish to recognize and preserve this record; and

     WHEREAS, it is the policy of this Legislature to recognize the historic occasions of our most cherished towns, such as Terry, which has not only endured, but thrived over the years:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE SENATE CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend and congratulate the Town of Terry upon the occasion of its 150th anniversary, and extend best wishes to the townspeople for continued success and prosperity in the future.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to the Mayor of Terry and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
