House Concurrent Resolution 17
A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING THE PEARL HIGH SCHOOL PIRATE MARCHING BAND UNDER THE DIRECTION OF JEFF CANNON UPON WINNING THE CLASS 5A MISSISSIPPI HIGH SCHOOL ACTIVITIES ASSOCIATION STATE MARCHING BAND CHAMPIONSHIP.
WHEREAS, on Saturday, October 29, 2011, the Pearl High School Pirate Marching Band was awarded First Place honors in the Class 5A Mississippi High School Activities Association (MHSAA) Marching Band Championship; and
WHEREAS, this outstanding band of 162 members won the Class 5A State Marching Band Championship with an exciting performance of their program, a lively and stimulating arrangement based on the historical and iconic images of Russia called, "Russian Images"; and
WHEREAS, it is customary in competitions of this nature for the difference between the top bands to be a fraction of a point; however, this year, Pearl High School claimed the title with a score of 94.95, one whole point higher than the runner up, and the highest score of any band competing across all classes at the competition; and
WHEREAS, the Pirate Band has been magnificently directed by Jeff Cannon, who has worked tirelessly to refine the skills of his pupils, accrediting the championship win to the ease of instruction with this group of students and the support of the administration of Pearl High School and the Pearl School District; and
WHEREAS, the members of the Pearl High School band have persevered to attain the highest honor within MHSAA's honors and awards, and they have remained dedicated to refining their talents and honing their musical skills; and
WHEREAS, the Pirate Band has developed a winning and cooperative spirit and an inspirational degree of sportsmanship, and their behavior and attitudes reflect tremendously upon the individual members, their directors and parents and bring honor to Pearl High School; and
WHEREAS, it is the policy of this Legislature to recognize the special accomplishments of the youth of this state, who are its future, and this outstanding group of student musicians has brought honor to their school, their parents, their community and to the State of Mississippi:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE SENATE CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend and congratulate the Pearl High School Pirate Marching Band and its directors upon winning the 2011 Class 5A Mississippi High School Activities Association Marching Band Championship and extend best wishes for continued success in all of their future musical and academic endeavors.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Mr. Jeff Cannon, Principal Matt Dillon, the Pearl School District School Board and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
