WHEREAS, on July 1, 1985, the state's first nuclear energy generating station began its operation approximately 10 miles north of Port Gibson, Mississippi; and

WHEREAS, Grand Gulf Nuclear Station has continued to provide clean, reliable and affordable energy throughout its 25 years of operation; and

WHEREAS, known nationally as a highly efficient producer of nuclear power, Grand Gulf provides 22.3 percent of all electricity generated in Mississippi; and

WHEREAS, Grand Gulf ranks as one of the top three out of the country's 104 nuclear power plants for lifetime electricity output and ninth in generation among nuclear plants worldwide; and

WHEREAS, setting the standard for safe work practices in the industry, Grand Gulf recorded more than 12 million hours without a lost time accident; and

WHEREAS, Grand Gulf is also an environmental leader, operating virtually emission free, providing a positive environmental impact equal to removing almost all motor vehicles from Mississippi's roadways; and

WHEREAS, Grand Gulf continues to set records in continuous online operations and calendar year electrical generation; and

WHEREAS, upon completion of an extended power upgrade in 2012, the plant will become the nation's most powerful single-unit producer of electricity; and

WHEREAS, it is the policy of this Legislature to commend and congratulate an energy producer, such as Grand Gulf Nuclear Station, that brings clean, reliable and affordable energy to the citizens of the State of Mississippi:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE SENATE CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend Entergy Corporation and Grand Gulf Nuclear Station for 25 years of commitment to public service, and congratulate the employees and management on the occasion of the plant's silver anniversary.
