A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING THE DISTINGUISHED AND MERITORIOUS SERVICE OF LIEUTENANT COLONEL BERT E. SULLIVAN, JR., RENDERED TO THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, AND CONGRATULATING HIM UPON THE OCCASION OF HIS RETIREMENT.

     WHEREAS, upon providing more than three decades of selfless and meritorious service to the United States as a member of the nation's elite fraternity of Armed Forces personnel, Lieutenant Colonel Bert E. Sullivan, Jr., retired from the Air National Guard and the United States Air Force, effective March 1, 2017; and

     WHEREAS, having initially enlisted in the United States Air Force on November 15, 1983, beginning his career as an aeromedical evacuation technician, before furthering his professional development by receiving a commission as a flight nurse, Lieutenant Colonel Sullivan distinguished himself in the performance of outstanding service to this nation while assigned to the 183rd Aeromedical Evacuation Squadron of the 172nd Airlift Wing, headquartered in Jackson, Mississippi; and

     WHEREAS, as a seasoned flight nurse examiner, Lieutenant Colonel Sullivan's superior leadership and ceaseless efforts resulted in major contributions to the total force aeromedical mission, amassing more than 2,000-plus flight hours and 689 sorties on multiple platforms, including the C-141, C-21, C-130, KC-135 and C-17; and

     WHEREAS, his selfless dedication and exceptional nursing skills have remained essential in enabling the unit to perform their worldwide aeromedical mission in support of the 11 major operations over the span of his 33-year career; and

     WHEREAS, equipped with a wealth of experience acquired from service as Commander over aeromedical operations at Bagram Air Base, Afghanistan, as Chief Nurse at Andrews Air Force Base, Maryland, and as Medical Crew Director on numerous operational missions, Lieutenant Colonel Sullivan has zealously supported humanitarian efforts during Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, in addition to serving admirably in key squadron leadership positions, including Director of Operations, Chief Nurse Executive and Deputy Commander; and

     WHEREAS, it is the policy of this Legislature to recognize the singularly distinctive career and accomplishments of such an immensely gallant individual as Lieutenant Colonel Sullivan, whose service to these United States and its global allies have culminated in a long and distinguished career and reflect great credit upon himself, the Air National Guard and the United States Air Force:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE SENATE CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend the distinguished and meritorious service of Lieutenant Colonel Bert E. Sullivan, Jr., rendered to the United States of America, congratulate him upon the occasion of his retirement and extend best wishes for continued success in all of his future endeavors while enjoying the lighter years of life.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Lieutenant Colonel Bert E. Sullivan, Jr., and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
