A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION CONGRATULATING THE UNIVERSITY OF MISSISSIPPI MEDICAL CENTER, DR. HANNAH GAY, DR. KATHERINE LUZURIAGA AND DR. DEBRA PERSAUD ON FUNCTIONALLY CURING A BABY BORN WITH AN HIV INFECTION AND COMMENDING THEM FOR A JOB WELL DONE.

WHEREAS, on Sunday, March 3, 2013, the medical world was rocked with positive news when the University of Mississippi Medical Center announced that pediatric HIV specialist Dr. Hannah Gay led a team of medical professionals whose treatment "functionally cured" a baby girl born with an HIV infection; and

WHEREAS, Johns Hopkins Children's Center virologist, Dr. Debra Persaud, and the University of Massachusetts Medical School Immunologist, Dr. Katherine Luzuriaga, were key members of this team that is a result of the partnership between the University of Mississippi Medical Center, the University of Massachusetts Medical School and Johns Hopkins Children's Center; and

WHEREAS, the results of their studies show that the medical team's prompt administration of antiviral treatment likely led to the infant's cure by stopping dormant cells responsible for reigniting the infection in HIV patients; and

WHEREAS, it is the policy of this Legislature to celebrate the extraordinary medical accomplishments of Mississippi's fine medical professionals and partnerships that literally breathe new life into the children of our state, who are its future:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE SENATE CONCURRING THERIN, That we do hereby congratulate the University of Mississippi Medical Center, Dr. Hannah Gay, Dr. Katherine Luzuriaga and Dr. Debra Persaud on functionally curing a baby born with an HIV infection.
