House Bill 1469

AN ACT TO PROVIDE THAT JUDGES SHALL INFORM PERSONS CONVICTED OF FELONIES REGARDING THE EFFECT SUCH CONVICTION HAS ON THE PERSON'S STATUS AS A QUALIFIED ELECTOR; AND FOR RELATED PURPOSES.

     BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI:

     SECTION 1.  Whenever a judge enters an order convicting any person for a felony which does or does not disqualify such person from being a qualified elector as provided in Section 241, Mississippi Constitution of 1890, the judge shall explain in the order the crimes which cause a person to be disqualified as a qualified elector and the steps that a person convicted of a disqualified crime must take in order to have suffrage restored and be a qualified elector.

     SECTION 2.  This act shall take effect and be in force from and after July 1, 2010.
