1.1A Senate resolution
1.2recognizing July 26, 2012, as Georgia Marinkov-Omorean Day.
1.3WHEREAS, Georgia Marinkov-Omorean has been a community builder and advocate for
1.4African American elders at Sabathani Community Center for the past 35 years; and
1.5WHEREAS, under Georgia's leadership, Sabathani has created a welcoming space and
1.6a program directed by the community's elders, and using Georgia's skill as a collaborator,
1.7Sabathani Senior Center developed relationships with international corporations, foundations,
1.8area nonprofits, and area businesses to bring additional resources that benefit the community's
1.9elders; and
1.10WHEREAS, Georgia channeled her knowledge and passion for health into the creation
1.11of a nurse's clinic, low-impact and chair aerobics, Club Sugar, nutrition and health classes, and
1.12the Sabathani Still Kickin' Seniors performance dance group, and Georgia has strengthened the
1.13community through recognizing particular ethnic contributions in events such as the Romanian
1.14dance concert; and
1.15WHEREAS, Georgia affirmed the need for a political voice of the elders and supported the
1.16creation of the Sabathani AARP Chapter and regular updates from the area's elected officials; in
1.17addition, Georgia understood the importance of people creating their own social institutions and
1.18supported the U-Meet-Us and Red Hat Chapters at Sabathani; and
1.19WHEREAS, Georgia has contributed to strengthening South Central Minneapolis across a
1.20great breadth of social dimensions, and more than 10,000 senior citizens have been encouraged
1.21by Georgia to walk through the doors of the Sabathani Senior Center to receive life enrichment
1.22services; and
2.1WHEREAS, Georgia Omorean graduated from the University of Minnesota with a
2.2Bachelor's degree in Social Work; she joined Sabathani Community Center in 1977 and was
2.3slowly mentored and nurtured by the "Queen Mother" of social service, Mrs. Ione Brown,
2.4and others of the U-Meet-Us senior group, a voluntary advocacy group organized to combat
2.5discrimination against seniors and elders of color, as well as Mrs. Clarissa Walker, the "Mother of
2.6South Minneapolis," and a founding member of Sabathani; and
2.7WHEREAS, Georgia began developing a creative welcoming space that served the needs
2.8of primarily African American seniors and elders who were disenfranchised; Georgia has been
2.9exceptional, dedicated, loving, compassionate, and generous of spirit; and
2.10NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the State of Minnesota that it
2.11honors the important community contributions of Georgia Marinkov-Omorean, and recognizes
2.12July 26, 2012, as Georgia Marinkov-Omorean Day in Minnesota.
2.13BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is directed to prepare
2.14an enrolled copy of this resolution, to be authenticated by the Secretary's signature and that
2.15of the Chair of the Senate Rules and Administration Committee, and transmit it to Georgia
2.16Marinkov-Omorean.
