1.1A Senate resolution
1.2celebrating the 140th anniversary of the Minneapolis park system.
1.3WHEREAS, on February 27, 1883, Governor Lucius Hubbard approved Special Laws 1883,
1.4Chapter 281, which established the Board of Park Commissioners of the city of Minneapolis and
1.5provided for the designation, acquisition, and improvement of lands to create public parks and
1.6parkways in the city of Minneapolis; and
1.7WHEREAS, the Minneapolis park system has contributed to the quality of life in Minneapolis
1.8and Minnesota by protecting the environment, responding to climate change, honoring cultural
1.9traditions, implementing quality youth and intergenerational programs, and caring for park assets
1.10and natural resources; and
1.11WHEREAS, the Minneapolis park system has won multiple national awards and is recognized
1.12for providing Minneapolitans, all Minnesotans, as well as national and international visitors with
1.13access to city lakes, the Mississippi River, natural areas, and over 55 miles of interconnected
1.14parkways and 102 miles of trails in its more than 7,000 acres of land and water; and
1.15WHEREAS, the Minneapolis park system has partnered with the Minneapolis Institute of
1.16Arts, the Walker Art Center with the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden, and other organizations to
1.17facilitate arts and cultural efforts in the state; and
1.18WHEREAS, the Minneapolis park system attracts over 30 million visits annually to parks
1.19and trails throughout the city, played a central role in revitalizing the Mississippi Riverfront in
1.20downtown Minneapolis, and is now working with the city to revitalize the river in North and
1.21Northeast Minneapolis and reclaim it as a natural and recreational resource; and
1.22WHEREAS, February 27, 2023, marks the 140th year of the Minneapolis Park and Recreation
1.23Board, and it is important to call special attention to this significant event in the history of
1.24Minneapolis and our state; and
1.25NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the State of Minnesota that it
1.26encourages all residents of Minneapolis and their guests to participate in the yearlong celebration
1.27honoring this park system. We pay tribute to the people of Minneapolis for their foresight in creating
1.28such a fine park and recreation system and look forward to the same dedication and effort during
1.29the next 140 years.
1.30BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is directed to prepare an
1.31enrolled copy of this resolution, to be authenticated by the Secretary's signature and that of the
1.32Chair of the Senate Rules and Administration Committee, and transmit it to the Minneapolis Park
1.33and Recreation Board.
