1.1A Senate resolution
1.2honoring the Khmer Freedom Fighters.
1.3WHEREAS, the state of Minnesota recognizes the Khmer Freedom Fighters of Cambodia
1.4for supporting and defending United States military forces during the conflict in Southeast Asia
1.5and their continued support and defense of the United States of America and all other free
1.6nations of the world; and
1.7WHEREAS, the Khmer veterans, who are also known as the Khmer Freedom Fighters,
1.8rescued United States pilots shot down in enemy-controlled territory and returned them to
1.9safety; and
1.10WHEREAS, the Khmer Freedom Fighters retrieved and prevented secret and sensitive
1.11information, technology, and equipment from falling into enemy hands; and
1.12WHEREAS, the Khmer Freedom Fighters fought and died with United States military
1.13forces during this time of conflict; and
1.14WHEREAS, the Khmer Freedom Fighters captured and destroyed enemy supplies and
1.15otherwise prevented them from being used by enemy forces to kill United States military forces;
1.16and
1.17WHEREAS, the Khmer Freedom Fighters gathered and provided intelligence about enemy
1.18troop positions, movement, and strength to United States military forces; and
1.19WHEREAS, the Khmer Freedom Fighters provided food, shelter, and support to United
1.20States military forces; and
1.21WHEREAS, the Khmer Freedom Fighters facilitated the evacuation of the United States
1.22Embassy in Phnom Penh on April 12, 1975; and
1.23WHEREAS, the Khmer Freedom Fighters are still subject to intimidation, ridicule,
1.24discrimination, and death if identified in Cambodia today; and
1.25WHEREAS, veterans of the Khmer Serei and the Khmer National Armed Forces defended
1.26human rights, freedom of speech, freedom of religion, and freedom of representation and
1.27association, as well as life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness; and
1.28WHEREAS, the Khmer Freedom Fighters have never received official recognition from
1.29the United States government for their heroic efforts and support; and
1.30NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the State of Minnesota that
1.31it officially affirms and recognizes the Khmer Freedom Fighters and the Cambodian people for
1.32their support and defense of United States military forces, freedom, and democracy in Southeast
1.33Asia, and encourages all other states in the United States of America to formally recognize the
1.34Khmer Freedom Fighters.
2.1BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is directed to prepare an
2.2enrolled copy of this resolution, to be authenticated by the Secretary's signature and that of the
2.3Chair of the Senate Rules and Administration Committee, and transmit it to the Governor.
