1.1A Senate resolution
1.2honoring Stevie Wonder for his contributions to music and his charitable works.
1.3WHEREAS, Stevie Wonder, an American musician who was blind from infancy, became
1.4one of the most creative musical figures of the late 20th century; and
1.5WHEREAS, Stevie developed his musical talents at an early age, beginning with his
1.6church choir in Detroit, and by age ten, he taught himself to play the harmonica, piano and drums.
1.7At just 11 years old, he was discovered by Ronnie White of the Motown band the Miracles, and in
1.81962, he released his debut album, "Little Stevie Wonder the 12 Year Old Genius"; and
1.9WHEREAS, in the 1970s he went through an unrivaled period of production, and over the
1.10course of four outstanding albums from 1972 to 1976, he created some of the most indelible songs
1.11in popular music history. He has had 32 #1 singles, sold over 100 million albums worldwide,
1.12won 25 Grammy Awards, including a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 1996, won an
1.13Academy Award for the song "I Just Called to Say I Love You" in 1985, and was inducted into
1.14the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1989; and
1.15WHEREAS, also known for his philanthropic causes, he successfully spearheaded a
1.16movement to create a national holiday recognizing Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and was named a
1.17United Nations Messenger Of Peace on December 2, 2009, with a special focus on persons
1.18with disabilities; and
1.19WHEREAS, for these and many other efforts, he was awarded the Presidential Medal of
1.20Freedom by President Barack Obama on November 24, 2014, and he continues to be pivotal in
1.21United States and world events, demonstrating the activism that has made him such a vital voice
1.22for social progress and world harmony; and
2.1WHEREAS, he will bring his live adaptation of his iconic "Songs in the Key of Life"
2.2album, a critically acclaimed performance, to Target Center on March 29, 2015; and
2.3NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the State of Minnesota that it
2.4honors Stevie Wonder for his contributions to music and his charitable works.
2.5BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is directed to prepare an
2.6enrolled copy of this resolution, to be authenticated by the Secretary's signature and that of the
2.7Chair of the Senate Rules and Administration Committee, and transmit it to Stevie Wonder.
