1.1A Senate resolution
1.2honoring Alexander Ogren for being named a National Merit Commended Student.
1.3WHEREAS, the National Merit Scholarship Program is an academic competition for
1.4recognition and scholarships that began in 1955; and
1.5WHEREAS, high school students enter the National Merit Scholarship Program by
1.6taking the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test, which serves as an
1.7initial screen of approximately 1.5 million entrants each year; in late September, about 34,000
1.8of the approximately 50,000 high scorers receive Letters of Commendation in recognition of
1.9outstanding academic promise; and
1.10WHEREAS, Commended Students achieve candidacy for special scholarships sponsored
1.11by corporations and businesses; and
1.12WHEREAS, Alexander Ogren, a student at Edina High School, was recently notified of his
1.13National Merit Commended status, a noteworthy honor deserving of legislative recognition; and
1.14NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the State of Minnesota that it
1.15congratulates Alexander Ogren on being named a National Merit Commended Student.
1.16BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is directed to prepare an
1.17enrolled copy of this resolution, to be authenticated by the Secretary's signature and that of the
1.18Chair of the Senate Rules and Administration Committee, and transmit it to Alexander Ogren.
