1.1A bill for an act
1.2relating to public safety; State Fire Code; prohibiting sprinkler requirements in
1.3single-family dwellings;amending Minnesota Statutes 2012, section 299F.011,
1.4by adding a subdivision.
1.5BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA:

1.6    Section 1. Minnesota Statutes 2012, section 299F.011, is amended by adding a
1.7subdivision to read:
1.8    Subd. 4d. Single-family dwelling; fire sprinklers. (a) Any requirement in the
1.9State Building Code, the State Fire Code, or a political subdivision of the state by code,
1.10by ordinance, as a condition of receiving public funding, or in any other way requiring
1.11the installation of fire sprinklers, any fire sprinkler system components, automatic
1.12fire-extinguishing equipment or devices, or mechanical fire suppression in any new or
1.13existing single-family detached dwelling unit does not apply to those new or existing
1.14single-family detached dwelling units that are: (1) less than 7,000 square feet in size; or
1.15(2) located outside the seven-county metropolitan area.
1.16(b) This subdivision does not affect or limit a requirement for smoke or fire
1.17detectors, alarms, or their components.
1.18EFFECTIVE DATE.This section is effective the day following final enactment.
