1.1A bill for an act
1.2relating to education; creating model curriculum for mental health;proposing
1.3coding for new law in Minnesota Statutes, chapter 120B.
1.4BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA:

1.5    Section 1. [120B.21] MENTAL HEALTH EDUCATION.
1.6The legislature encourages districts to provide instruction in mental health for
1.7students in grades 7 through 12. Instruction must be aligned with local health and physical
1.8education standards and integrated into a district's existing programs, curriculum, or the
1.9general school environment. The commissioner of education, in consultation with mental
1.10health organizations, shall provide assistance to districts including:
1.11(1) age-appropriate model learning activities for grades 7 through 12 that address
1.12mental health components of the National Health Education Standards and the benchmarks
1.13developed by the department's quality teaching network in health and physical education,
1.14and best practices in mental health education; and
1.15(2) a directory of resources for planning and implementing age-appropriate mental
1.16health curriculum and instruction in grades 7 through 12.
