A bill to amend 1976 PA 451, entitled
"The revised school code,"
(MCL 380.1 to 380.1852) by adding section 1531o.
THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF MICHIGAN ENACT:
Sec. 1531o. (1) A school district shall reimburse a teacher
employed by the school district for the cost of earning an
endorsement in a critical shortage discipline included on the list
compiled under section 61 of the public school employees retirement
act of 1979, 1980 PA 300, MCL 38.1361. The school district shall
provide the reimbursement to the teacher upon earning the
endorsement if the teacher commits to working in the school
district for at least 3 years after earning the endorsement. A
teacher is eligible for reimbursement under this subsection if he
or she provides to the school district proof that he or she has
earned the endorsement and proof of his or her payment of the cost
of earning the endorsement, in a form and manner prescribed by the
department.
(2) If a teacher who receives reimbursement under subsection
(1) voluntarily leaves the employment of the school district that
provided the reimbursement within 3 years after receiving the
reimbursement, the teacher shall repay the full amount of the
reimbursement to the school district.
(3) A school district shall prioritize a reimbursement under
subsection (1) to a teacher who is teaching in a field for which he
or she does not have an endorsement and who earns an endorsement in
that field.
(4) Subject to an appropriation, the department shall
reimburse a school district for costs incurred by the school
district under this section.
Enacting section 1. This amendatory act takes effect 90 days
after the date it is enacted into law.
