MADAM PRESIDENT:
I offer the following resolution and move its adoption:
A SENATE RESOLUTION recognizing North Miami FFA
for their accomplishments in the state of Indiana.
Whereas, The Indiana FFA is a youth organization that
provides young people with the opportunities to excel and
develop while making a positive difference in their communities
and across the state of Indiana;
Whereas, The Indiana FFA Foundation was established in
1961 to support the programs of Indiana FFA Association. The
Indiana FFA Association influences positive growth in
agricultural education and career development;
Whereas, The North Miami chapter was founded in 1961
when the school was formed. The advisor was Mr. Keith
Overton, who served from 1961 through 1990. When Mr.
Overton retired, one of his own students, Glen Jones, took on
the leadership role and has served the chapter for the past 22
years;
Whereas, The North Miami chapter is made up of 68 students who are studying agriculture in high school. Their chapter is known for excelling in the development of leadership
and communication skills among their members;
Whereas, Winning national titles in dairy evaluation,
poultry and egg judging, and soils evaluation has granted the
chapter the opportunity to travel to Europe to compete in the
Royal Highland Show in Edinburgh, Scotland;
Whereas, Members of the North Miami chapter have
demonstrated their strong leadership skills by serving at local,
district, sectional, and state levels. Their community
development activities have included building handicap ramps,
conducting Red Cross blood drives, and collecting donations
for a local food bank. In the fall of 2011 alone they worked
with local farmers to raise over $11,000 for the local food
bank; and
Whereas, The FFA organization was started for farm boys
82 years ago and has grown into an organization of 50% male
and 50% female with something to offer everyone. Their strong
leadership skills continue to pave the way for young adults
across the world, and this holds especially true for the North
Miami FFA chapter: Therefore,
SECTION 1. The Indiana Senate recognizes the North Miami FFA chapter for their accomplishments in Indiana.
SECTION 2. The Secretary of the Senate is hereby directed to transmit a copy of this Resolution to Mr. Glen Jones and Principal Tim Garland.
