MADAM PRESIDENT:
I offer the following resolution and move its adoption:
A SENATE RESOLUTION congratulating the Notre Dame
women's basketball team on an exceptional 2010-2011 season.
Whereas, Notre Dame finished a phenomenal season with 13 wins in the Big East Conference and an overall record of 31 wins and 8 losses;
Whereas, in their 18 th appearance in the NCAA Tournament , Notre Dame earned a trip to the Sweet Sixteen by defeating Utah 67- 54 in the First Round and Temple 77- 64 in the Second Round;
Whereas, by earning victories in the first two rounds, Notre Dame played its way into its 9 th Sweet Sixteen under Coach McGraw and its second appearance in two years. In a masterful performance, Notre Dame 's stifling defense held
Oklahoma to just 17 first half points and forced 24
Oklahoma turnovers, leading the Irish to a 78-
53 victory;
Whereas, in the
Elite Eight
round, Notre Dame
faced the favored No. 1 seed Tennessee Volunteers.
Having
lost their previous 20 games to Tennessee, t
he Irish played
with confidence
and
determination,
cruising to an impressive
73-
59 victory, giving the Irish their biggest win in a regional
final and sending Notre Dame to its 3
rd
Final Four;
Whereas, in the Final Four,
Notre Dame faced the
two-
time defending champion Connecticut Huskies. On a
night that Notre Dame made 52% of their field goal attempts
against the vaunted Connecticut defense, sophomore guard
Skylar Diggins led the team
's dynamic offensive performance
with 28 points and 6 assists
, helping the Irish knock off the
Overall No. 1 seed Connecticut Huskies by a score of 72-
63;
Whereas, with a victory over Connecticut, Notre
Dame earned a chance to play for their second NCAA
championship title and became the first team to defeat
Tennessee and Connecticut in the same tournament;
Whereas, Notre Dame played Texas A&M in the
NCAA championship game. In the well-fought contest that
came down the final minute, the Irish were dealt their only
loss of the tournament; and
Whereas, following the rich tradition of basketball in
the state of Indiana, Notre Dame's historic season has
reestablished the Irish as one of college basketball's best
teams and will long be remembered as an incredible
accomplishment: Therefore,
SECTION 1. The Indiana Senate congratulates the Notre Dame Fighting Irish on their exceptional season.
SECTION 2. The Secretary of the Senate is hereby directed to transmit a copy of this Resolution to Notre Dame President Reverend John Jenkins, Director of Athletics Jack Swarbrick, and Coach Muffet McGraw.
