SENATE RESOLUTION


     MADAM PRESIDENT:

    I offer the following resolution and move its adoption:

    A SENATE RESOLUTION honoring Annie Burns Hicks, the first African-American teacher in Hammond, Indiana.


     Whereas, Annie Burns Hicks attended Maywood Schools in Hammond, Indiana;

    Whereas, Annie Burns Hicks graduated from Hammond High School, entered Ball State Teacher's College in Muncie, Indiana and eventually obtained a Master's Degree from DePaul University in Chicago, Illinois;

    Whereas, In 1958, Annie Burns Hicks applied for a teacher's position with the Hammond school system, but was initially denied because she was African-American;

    Whereas, Annie Burns Hicks filed a lawsuit against this discriminatory practice and was eventually hired as the first African-American teacher in the Hammond public school system, paving the way for other teachers to follow; and

    Whereas, Annie Burns Hicks co-authored the first full day kindergarten program in Hammond, Indiana, instituted a formal reading program into Maywood's full day kindergarten,

and worked in the first Head Start staff program: Therefore,

            Be it resolved by the Senate of the

General Assembly of the State of Indiana:

1 SECTION 1 The Indiana Senate honors Annie Burns Hicks, the 2 first African-American teacher in Hammond, Indiana.
3 SECTION 2 The Secretary of the Senate shall transmit a copy of 4 this resolution to Annie Burns Hicks and Maywood Elementary 5 School .
