SENATE RESOLUTION

MADAM PRESIDENT:

    I offer the following resolution and move its adoption:

        A SENATE RESOLUTION urging the Legislative Council to assign to the Census Data Advisory Committee the topic of straight ticket voting.

    Whereas, Today, only 15 states offer straight ticket voting;

    Whereas, Straight ticket voting has been declining in popularity over the past decades with at least three states abolishing it and a fourth nearly abolishing it, during the 1990s;

    Whereas, Two more states abolished straight ticket voting in 2006 and 2007, followed by Wisconsin in 2011;

    Whereas, The Census Data Advisory Committee should study the advisability of removing a voter's option to vote for all candidates of a political party or an independent ticket at one time (straight ticket voting) in a general or municipal election, except for candidates for presidential electors: Therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate

of the General Assembly of the State of Indiana:
:

    SECTION 1. That the Legislative Council is urged to assign to the Census Data Advisory Committee the topic of straight ticket voting.
