A SENATE RESOLUTION honoring the friendship between
Indiana and Turkey.

MADAM PRESIDENT:
I offer the following resolution and move its adoption:
A SENATE RESOLUTION honoring the friendship
between Indiana and Turkey.
Whereas, The Republic of Turkey and the United States
of America are long-standing allies, both cherishing the
universal values of freedom, democracy, and human rights;
Whereas, In its alliances with the United States, Turkey
has demonstrated its commitment to peace and liberty, as
well as its political and religious tolerance;
Whereas, There are approximately 400,000 Turkish
Americans in the United States, and a growing number in
Indiana;
Whereas, Indiana values its vibrant and mutually
beneficial relationship with Turkey, the world's fifteenth
largest economy and Europe's sixth largest economy, and is
excited at the prospect of future growth;
Whereas, Expanding the relationship between Indiana and Turkey is economically and culturally worthy;
Whereas, In May 2010, the Indiana State Department of Agriculture (ISDA) hosted a delegation from Turkey to showcase Indiana hardwoods. The relationship between ISDA and Turkey began when ISDA traveled to Istanbul and made 35 trade leads for lumber and veneer;
Whereas, Jasper, Indiana has built a strong relationship
with Turkey by supplying them with logs, lumber, veneer, and
furniture products;
Whereas, The Niagara Foundation and the Turkish-
American Federation of the Midwest are huge proponents of
the Turkish-Hoosier Friendship Task Force;
Whereas, Within the last three years, 400 civic leaders,
elected officials, and academics traveled to Turkey to
strengthen the relationship between Hoosiers and Turkish
people. This included creating partnerships between the
civic foundations, encouraging Indiana businesses to create
more business opportunities, and starting student exchange
programs between the universities;
Whereas, It is in the best interest of the state of Indiana
to further cultivate the relationship with Turkey and other
Turkic nations; and
Whereas, The friendship between Indiana and the
Republic of Turkey is important and merits recognition:
Therefore,
SECTION 1. The Indiana Senate honors the friendship between Indiana and Turkey.
SECTION 2. The Secretary of the Senate is hereby directed to transmit a copy of this Resolution to Bilal Eksili.
