SENATE RESOLUTION


     MADAM PRESIDENT:

    I offer the following resolution and move its adoption:

    A SENATE RESOLUTION congratulating Sue Layman on her homecoming to Isis Temple, and for her 35 years of service in Daughters of the Nile.

     Whereas, Sue Layman, the Supreme Queen and Chief Executive Officer of Daughters of the Nile, will celebrate her homecoming to Isis Temple on February 26, 2011;

    Whereas, Born and raised in Evansville, Indiana, Sue Layman worked for 21 years as a reading teacher for the Evansville Vanderburgh School Corporation;

    Whereas, Sue Layman is the first Supreme Queen from Evansville since the 1940s. She was installed as Supreme Queen in June 2010 after serving more than 35 years in Daughters of the Nile;

    Whereas, Daughters of the Nile is an international fraternal organization for women 18 years of age or older, who are related by birth or marriage to a Shriner, Master Mason, or Daughter of the Nile. The organization was founded in 1913 in Seattle, Washington for the purpose of

building character among women and for social entertainment advancement;

    Whereas, In 1922, Daughters of the Nile designated the Shriners Hospital for Children as their sole philanthropy. Support is given to these hospitals by monetary donations, by the provision of items requested by the hospitals, and by numerous volunteer hours. Daughters of the Nile provide approximately $1.5 million in yearly cash contributions to the Shriners Hospitals for Children;

    Whereas, During her tenure as Supreme Queen, Sue Layman visited 147 Subordinate Daughters of the Nile Temples in the United States and Canada, including five temples in Indiana. She has made official visits to 21 of 22 Shriners Hospitals for Children;

    Whereas, In June 2010, Sue Layman oversaw the annual week-long meeting of Daughters of the Nile, bringing in over 2,000 visitors;

    Whereas, Sue Layman joined the Daughters of the Nile at the behest of her mother, who was a member, and because Daughters of the Nile needed singers in their choir;

    Whereas, Once her tenure as Supreme Queen ends, Sue Layman will be a lifetime member of the Daughters of the Nile board, and will be a voice for Indiana women in decisions impacting the future of the group; and

    Whereas, Sue Layman's homecoming to Isis Temple on February 26, 2011 is a landmark occasion. Her 35 years of service in Daughters of the Nile, including her tenure as Supreme Queen, are worthy of commendation: Therefore,


Be it resolved by the Senate of the

General Assembly of the State of Indiana:


    SECTION 1. The Indiana Senate congratulates Sue Layman on her homecoming to Isis Temple, and for her 35 years of service in Daughters of the Nile.
    SECTION 2. The Secretary of the Senate is hereby directed to transmit a copy of this Resolution to Sue Layman.
