Second Regular Session 117th General Assembly (2012)

SENATE CONCURRENT
RESOLUTION No. _____

    A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION recognizing the 175th Anniversary of the City of Carmel .

    Whereas, Carmel was founded on April 13, 1837 by Quaker Pioneers under the name Bethlehem. The name was later changed to Carmel in 1846 when a post office was approved for the community;

    Whereas, When Carmel incorporated in 1874 it had an estimated population of 150. That number has since risen to 79,191 as of the last census;

    Whereas, In 1924, one of the first traffic signals in the United States was installed at the intersection of Main Street and Range Line Road. The traffic signal was the first in Indiana, an invention of local resident Leslie Haines;

    Whereas, In 2000, Carmel further revolutionized the flow of traffic by introducing the widespread use of roundabouts, which received the Climate Protection Award by the U.S. Conference of Mayors. Boasting over 80 roundabouts, Carmel has more roundabouts than any other state, and is now known as the unofficial roundabout capital of the country;

    Whereas, Carmel High School opened in 1887 with a mere 40 students. Carmel is now the second largest school in the state with a population of 4,400 students. Carmel High School

won their 100th IHSAA championship in 2011, making them the winningest school in the state of Indiana; and

    Whereas, Carmel has grown from its humble beginnings to become the 8th largest city in Indiana, one of the best places to live according to CNN Money Magazine, and one of the "Best Cities to Relocate to in America" according to CNBC. With their dedication to the community, the school systems, and environmental initiatives, Carmel certainly earns the title of one of the best places to live: Therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate     of the General Assembly

of the State of Indiana, the House of Representatives     concurring:

    SECTION 1. The Indiana General Assembly congratulates Carmel on their 175th anniversary.
    SECTION 2. The Secretary of the Senate is hereby directed to transmit a copy of this Resolution to Jim Brainard, Carmel Mayor; and the Carmel City Council .
