    A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION congratulating Byron Ernest, 2010 Indiana Teacher of the Year.

     Whereas, Byron Ernest was born into a family of teachers, though he did not intend to become one himself. Now after 25 years of teaching excellence, he has earned the title of 2010 Indiana Teacher of the Year;

    Whereas, Ernest earned a bachelor's degree and a master's degree from Purdue University. He was encouraged to become a teacher by a professor at Purdue;

    Whereas, Ernest taught at several schools before reaching Lebanon High School. He spent time at Shelby Southwestern Schools and Randolph Central Schools;

    Whereas, As a teacher at Lebanon High School, Ernest has maintained his focus on the students, and worked to provide an environment where students are eager to learn and achieve;

    Whereas, One of Ernest's greatest accomplishments at Lebanon is the overhaul of the high school's agriculture program. Ernest restarted the Agriculture Department that was dormant for over 40 years, and serves as agriculture science instructor;        


    Whereas, Ernest's vision and leadership earned him the Teacher Creativity Fellowship Grant through the Lilly Endowment. The grant was used to form a relationship with Purdue University where students can earn up to 10 hours of college credit by taking agriculture courses at Lebanon High School;

    Whereas, Faculty of Lebanon High School recognized Ernest's achievements by voting him the school's teacher of the year; and

    Whereas, Ernest was presented the title of 2010 Indiana Teacher of the Year by Superintendent of Public Instruction Dr. Tony Bennett at a surprise convocation held at Lebanon High School. Ernest became the first agriculture teacher to earn the honor and he will compete for the title of National Teacher of the Year: Therefore,
                    
        

Be it resolved by the Senate     of the General Assembly

of the State of Indiana, the House of Representatives     concurring:


    SECTION 1. The Indiana General Assembly congratulates Byron Ernest for being named 2010 Indiana Teacher of the Year and wishes him luck in the national competition.
    SECTION 2. The Secretary of the Senate is hereby directed to transmit a copy of this Resolution to Byron Ernest; Kevin O'Rourke,
Principal of Lebanon High School; and Dr. Robert L. Taylor, Superintendent of Lebanon Community School Corporation.
