RESOLUTION

        A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION honoring Charles E. Dawson.

    Whereas, Born in Columbus, Ohio, on August 5, 1932, Charles E. Dawson moved to Indiana while in his teens;

    Whereas, Upon graduation from Wiley High School in Terre Haute, Charles E. Dawson enlisted in the United States Army;

    Whereas, After graduating in one of the top three positions from a basic training and an army administration course, Charles E. Dawson was assigned to headquarters, 101st Airborne Division at Camp Breckinridge in Kentucky and was later stationed in Germany until his separation from service in 1954;

    Whereas, In October 1956, Charles E. Dawson enlisted in the Indiana Army National Guard as a "traditional guardsman", attaining the rank of master sergeant one week before his 26th birthday;

    Whereas, After becoming a technician in 1961, Charles E. Dawson was enlisted to become a drill instructor at the first Indiana Army National Guard noncommissioned officer course at Fort Benjamin Harrison;

    Whereas, Charles E. Dawson again entered active duty at the age of 47 under the Special Active/Guard Reserve (AGR) Program;

    Whereas, He remained on active duty until his retirement at age 60 in August 1992 as a chief warrant officer four;

    Whereas, In recognition of his many accomplishments, Charles E. Dawson has received numerous award and recognitions, including the Army Commendation Medal (2nd Award), the Army Achievement Medal, the Army Good Conduct Medal, the Army Reserve Component Achievement Medal (5th Award), the Army of Occupation Medal, the National Defense Service Medal (2nd Award), the Humanitarian Service Medal, the Armed Forces Reserve Medal (3rd Award), the Non-commissioned Officers Professional Development Ribbon (Numeral 3), the Army Service Ribbon, the Indiana Meritorious Service Medal, the Indiana Commendation Medal (4th Award), the Indiana Long Service Medal (35 Years), the Indiana Emergency Service Ribbon (4th Award), the Indiana Military Volunteer Emblem, the Adjutant General's Staff Identification Badge, and the Military Department of Indiana Ceremonial Unit Badge and Tab;

    Whereas, Charles E. Dawson was also awarded a Sagamore of the Wabash by Governor Evan Bayh and a Hoosier Hero by Indiana's Adjutant General, Major General Charles W. Whitaker, and Kentucky Governor Paul E. Patton commissioned him a Kentucky Colonel, Kentucky's highest civilian award;

    Whereas, Charles E. Dawson continues to serve the military community even after retirement as the military protocol officer for the Indiana National Guard, a state civilian position;

    Whereas, Charles E. Dawson is active in the military community, serving as a member of the American Legion, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Air Force Association, the Reserve Officers Association, the Military Officers' Association of America, the Association of the United States Army, American Veterans, the National Guard Association of the United States, the National Guard Association of Indiana, and the 38th Infantry Division Association;

    Whereas, Among Charles E. Dawson's proudest

achievements in his stellar military career were designing and creating Indiana's Homeland Defense Ribbon and Overseas Service Ribbon, being a charter member and organizer of the military department of Indiana's ceremonial unit, and serving as the creator and editor of the Retired Guardian, a quarterly newsletter addressing the interests of national guard retirees;

    Whereas, Charles E. Dawson is married to the former Irma Schooley of Morgantown, and together they have a daughter, Emily Hill, and sons, John and James; and

    Whereas, With a military career spanning five decades, Charles E. Dawson continues to serve his country and his state with honor and integrity: Therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate of the General Assembly

of the State of Indiana, the House of Representatives concurring:

    SECTION 1. That the Indiana General Assembly wishes to congratulates Charles E. Dawson on an outstanding military career and his many contributions to his community and state.
    SECTION 2. That copies of this resolution be transmitted by the Secretary of the Senate to Charles E. Dawson and his family.
