        A HOUSE RESOLUTION recognizing the National Guard Patriot Academy.

    Whereas, The National Guard Patriot Academy is a National Guard Bureau pilot program to offer qualified high school dropouts an opportunity to join the National Guard, earn their high school diploma, and give back to the community;

    Whereas, Accredited by the Indiana State Board of Education as a freeway high school, the Patriot Academy is the first and only accredited high school for soldiers run by any branch of the United States Armed Forces;

    Whereas, The Patriot Academy is a residential facility that

can house up to 250 students, and the academy is located at the Muscatatuck Urban Training Center in Butlerville, where students focus on academics, military training, and community service;

    Whereas, The length of the stay at the Patriot Academy varies from student to student depending on the number of credits necessary to meet Indiana graduation requirements;

    Whereas, The Academy opened in the summer of 2009 and graduated its first senior class in 2010, with most students earning a General or Core-40 Diploma;

    Whereas, The academic program at the Patriot Academy is a combination of instruction by on-site, licensed teachers and distance learning;

    Whereas, Through the Patriot Academy, the military is helping to reduce the growing number of high school dropouts by offering those young people who drop out of a more traditional school a second chance to succeed; and

    Whereas, The National Guard Patriot Academy offers its students an opportunity to be better prepared to meet the challenges of military and civilian life: Therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives of the

General Assembly of the State of Indiana:

    SECTION 1. That the Indiana House of Representatives acknowledges the opportunities the National Guard Patriot Academy has extended to its students and urges the academy to continue to develop and expand the academy's curriculum.
    SECTION 2. That the Principal Clerk of the House of Representatives transmit copies of this resolution to Commandant Lieutenant Colonel William (Kenny) Freeman, Jr.
