2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to | ||||||
3 | learn of the death of Charles R. "Cork" Walgreen III of Lake | ||||||
4 | Forest, who passed away on September 26, 2016; and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, Charles Walgreen III was born in Chicago on | ||||||
6 | November 11, 1935 to Mary Ann Leslie and Charles R. Walgreen | ||||||
7 | Jr.; and
| ||||||
8 | WHEREAS, Charles Walgreen III started his 58-year | ||||||
9 | Walgreens career in 1952 as a stock boy after school and on | ||||||
10 | vacations; he later entered the University of Michigan in Ann | ||||||
11 | Arbor, where he earned his bachelor's degree in pharmacy in | ||||||
12 | 1958; he returned to Walgreens in 1959 as a pharmacist at the | ||||||
13 | store on Western Avenue in Chicago; and
| ||||||
14 | WHEREAS, In 1963, Charles Walgreen III was named | ||||||
15 | Administrative Assistant to the Vice-President of Operations | ||||||
16 | and was elected to the company's board of directors; he served | ||||||
17 | as District Manager from 1965 to 1966 and as Western Regional | ||||||
18 | Director and Midwestern Regional Director from 1966 to 1968; he | ||||||
19 | was named Vice-President in 1968, President in 1969, President | ||||||
20 | and Chief Executive Officer in 1971, and Chairman and CEO in | ||||||
21 | 1976; he served as Walgreens Chief Executive Officer until his | ||||||
22 | retirement in January of 1998; he remained Chairman until |

1 | August of 1999; he retired from the board of directors as | ||||||
2 | Chairman Emeritus in 2010; and
| ||||||
3 | WHEREAS, Charles Walgreen III was a member of the American | ||||||
4 | Pharmaceutical Association, Director and Chairman of the | ||||||
5 | National Association of Chain Drug Stores, Director of the | ||||||
6 | Illinois Retail Merchants Association, and Director of Junior | ||||||
7 | Achievement of Chicago; he was a member of many other | ||||||
8 | charitable and civic organizations; and
| ||||||
9 | WHEREAS, In 2004, Charles Walgreen III donated $2 million | ||||||
10 | to his alma mater, the University of Michigan College of | ||||||
11 | Pharmacy, to establish a professorship focusing on researching | ||||||
12 | the socioeconomics of health care policies, regulations, and | ||||||
13 | ethics; and
| ||||||
14 | WHEREAS, Charles Walgreen III was preceded in death by his | ||||||
15 | parents and his son, Tad Alexander Walgreen Sr.; and
| ||||||
16 | WHEREAS, Charles Walgreen III is survived by his wife, | ||||||
17 | Kathleen B. Walgreen; his sons, Charles Richard Walgreen, Kevin | ||||||
18 | Walgreen, Leslie Ray Walgreen, Chris Patrick Walgreen, Tad | ||||||
19 | Alexander Walgreen, and Carl Allen Jr.; his daughters, Brooke | ||||||
20 | Julia Walgreen, and Jorie Allen Grassie; 19 grandchildren; one | ||||||
21 | great-grandchild; his sister, Leslie Ann Walgreen Pratt; his | ||||||
22 | brother, James Alan Walgreen; and several nieces and nephews; |

2 | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-NINTH GENERAL | ||||||
3 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of | ||||||
4 | Charles R. "Cork" Walgreen III, and extend our sincere | ||||||
5 | condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved | ||||||
6 | him; and be it further
| ||||||
7 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
8 | presented to the family of Charles Walgreen III as an | ||||||
9 | expression of our deepest sympathy.
