SENATE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Ruth M. (Mortenson) Kennedy of Joliet,
4who passed away on October 11, 2018; and
5 WHEREAS, Ruth Kennedy was born in Barnesville, Minnesota to
6Martin and Erlyce (Nelson) Mortenson in 1936; she earned her
7degree from North Dakota State University; shortly after
8graduation, she met her future husband, Daniel Lennon Kennedy;
9and
10 WHEREAS, Ruth Kennedy was a pioneer in politics and a
11lifelong environmental and animal activist; she was elected to
12the Will County Board, where she served from 1974 until 1996;
13while a member of the Forest Preserve Board, she spearheaded
14the acquisition and expansion of forest preserve land
15throughout the county; she was also one of the founding members
16of the Will County Humane Society, the original no-kill
17facility in the county; her garage served to house the first
18kennels until property was purchased in Shorewood, where the
19Humane Society still operates today; and
20 WHEREAS, Ruth Kennedy was preceded in death by her husband,
21Daniel; her parents; and her siblings, Renee Edenstrom, Bud
22Mortenson, Anne Daly, Edna Christenson, and Harriett Gooddahl;

2 WHEREAS, Ruth Kennedy is survived by her children, Daniel
3(fiance Gigi Studer) Kennedy, Hayes (Gloria) Kennedy, and
4Thomas (Laina) Kennedy; her grandchildren, Erin, Madeline,
5Neera, Ahsha, Kieran, and Cash Kennedy; and her many nieces and
6nephews; therefore, be it
7 RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDREDTH GENERAL
8ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
9Ruth M. (Mortenson) Kennedy and extend our sincere condolences
10to her family, friends, and all who knew and loved her; and be
11it further
12 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
13presented to the family of Ruth Kennedy as an expression of our
14deepest sympathy.
