2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to | ||||||
3 | learn of the death of Andrew Vincent Granato of Champaign, who | ||||||
4 | passed away on June 3, 2015; and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, Andrew Granato was born in Cleveland, Ohio to | ||||||
6 | Salvatore Granato and Francesca (nee Polizzi) Granato; he | ||||||
7 | graduated from Bethlemen Central High School in Delmar, New | ||||||
8 | York and served in the United States Naval Reserve while | ||||||
9 | attending the University of Rochester; he received his Bachelor | ||||||
10 | of Science in 1948 and his Master of Science in 1950 from the | ||||||
11 | Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York; he earned | ||||||
12 | his Ph.D. in 1955 from Brown University in Providence, Rhode | ||||||
13 | Island; and
| ||||||
14 | WHEREAS, Andrew Granato was a world-renowned physicist at | ||||||
15 | the University of Illinois, recruited to be a researcher in the | ||||||
16 | field of Condensed Matter Physics; he published more than 170 | ||||||
17 | peer-reviewed papers and was the primary sponsor of 32 Ph.D. | ||||||
18 | students; he focused on several lines of research in structural | ||||||
19 | weaknesses and imperfections in materials; and

20 | WHEREAS, Andrew Granato was a Research Associate at Brown | ||||||
21 | University from 1955 to 1957; from 1957 to 1959, he was a | ||||||
22 | Research Assistant Professor at the University of Illinois; |

1 | from 1959 to 1961, he was a visiting professor in Aachen, | ||||||
2 | Germany, holding a Guggenheim Fellowship for the first year; he | ||||||
3 | was appointed associate professor for physics in 1961 and | ||||||
4 | professor of physics in 1964; from 1971 to 1972, he was an | ||||||
5 | associate in the Center for Advanced Study at the University of | ||||||
6 | Illinois; and

7 | WHEREAS, In 1976, Andrew Granato received a United States | ||||||
8 | Scientist Award from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation for | ||||||
9 | Research at the Technical University in Aachen; he was a member | ||||||
10 | of the Executive Committee of the Division of Condensed Matter | ||||||
11 | Physics of the American Physical Society, a Fellow of the | ||||||
12 | American Physical Society and the Acoustical Society of | ||||||
13 | America, and a member of the American Institute of | ||||||
14 | Metallurgical Engineers and the Institute of Electrical and | ||||||
15 | Electronics Engineers; he was Chairman of the International | ||||||
16 | Conference on Internal Friction and Ultrasonic Attenuation | ||||||
17 | held in Urbana in 1985; from 1987 to 1988, he was the Bernd T. | ||||||
18 | Matthias Visiting Scholar at the Los Alamos National Laboratory | ||||||
19 | and Guest Research Fellow at the Institute for Industrial | ||||||
20 | Science at the University of Tokyo; he also received several | ||||||
21 | fellowships and awards, including the Zener Prize and | ||||||
22 | Guggenheim and Humboldt fellowships; and

23 | WHEREAS, Andrew Granato was preceded in death by his | ||||||
24 | parents, and his wife, Pauline Brassard Granato; and

1 | WHEREAS, Andrew Granato is survived by his 4 children, | ||||||
2 | Samuel Charles Granato (Susy), Andrea Marguerite Frankenfield | ||||||
3 | (David), Sarah Francesca Yeates, and Ann Vivian Welch (Rick); | ||||||
4 | his 3 grandchildren, Andrew Granato, Willis Welch, and | ||||||
5 | Alexander Granato; and his sister, Vivian Granato; therefore, | ||||||
6 | be it

7 | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-NINTH GENERAL | ||||||
8 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of | ||||||
9 | Andrew Vincent Granato, and extend our sincere condolences to | ||||||
10 | his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it | ||||||
11 | further
| ||||||
12 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
13 | presented to the family of Andrew Granato as an expression of | ||||||
14 | our deepest sympathy.
