2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to | ||||||
3 | learn of the death of Alice Lucille Tregay of Chicago; and
| ||||||
4 | WHEREAS, Alice Tregay was born in Evanston on November 14, | ||||||
5 | 1929 to Roy and Fannie (nee Fuller) Hicks; she lived in | ||||||
6 | Evanston for most of her young life, attending Foster School | ||||||
7 | and Evanston Township High School; in 1947, she married Vincent | ||||||
8 | Lindsey; in 1964, after the passing of her husband, she married | ||||||
9 | James Tregay; as an adult, she went back to school and attended | ||||||
10 | Southeast Jr. College (now Olive-Harvey) and Roosevelt | ||||||
11 | University; and
| ||||||
12 | WHEREAS, Alice Tregay was an integral part of the group | ||||||
13 | that from 1962 to 1966 protested school overcrowding and | ||||||
14 | segregation in black neighborhoods; she was also involved in | ||||||
15 | helping to put an end to housing discrimination; she worked | ||||||
16 | closely with Operation Breadbasket (now Rainbow PUSH) in its | ||||||
17 | struggle against discrimination against people of color in the | ||||||
18 | hiring practices of large companies; and
| ||||||
19 | WHEREAS, Alice Tregay was very active in politics; she | ||||||
20 | worked for numerous elected officials, including Aldermen | ||||||
21 | William Cousins and Abner Mikva, Congressman Ralph Metcalfe, | ||||||
22 | President Jimmy Carter, Vice-President Walter Mondale, Mayor |

1 | Harold Washington, and United States Senator Carol Mosley | ||||||
2 | Braun; she also worked on the presidential campaigns of Rev. | ||||||
3 | Jesse Jackson; she was chief lobbyist for the Black Illinois | ||||||
4 | Legislative Lobby as part of her work with The Woodlawn | ||||||
5 | Organization; after discovering the key to a successful | ||||||
6 | election was voter registration, she became instrumental in the | ||||||
7 | creation of the Political Education Division of Rainbow PUSH, | ||||||
8 | becoming the Director until her retirement; and
| ||||||
9 | WHEREAS, Alice Tregay has been recognized for her | ||||||
10 | outstanding work in civil rights and community service by | ||||||
11 | numerous organizations and has received many prestigious | ||||||
12 | awards, most notably one presented to her in March of 2004 by | ||||||
13 | Illinois State Senator Barack Obama; and
| ||||||
14 | WHEREAS, Alice Tregay was always a hard worker and worked | ||||||
15 | all her life at various jobs; she worked for the Illinois | ||||||
16 | Department of Human Rights for 8 years; and
| ||||||
17 | WHEREAS, Alice Tregay is survived by her husband, James; | ||||||
18 | her 3 children, Alice (Robert) Fluegge, David (Clare) Tregay, | ||||||
19 | and Dawn Emmett; her 6 children, Derrick (Rachel) Fluegge, Adam | ||||||
20 | (Janette) Hickman, Jason Hickman, Robert (Heather) Fluegge, | ||||||
21 | and Rachel and Erika Emmett; her 10 great-grandchildren; her | ||||||
22 | brother, Sanders (Karen) Hicks; and numerous cousins and | ||||||
23 | friends who were also her family; therefore, be it

1 | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-NINTH GENERAL | ||||||
2 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of | ||||||
3 | Alice Lucille Tregay, and extend our sincere condolences to her | ||||||
4 | family, friends, and all who knew and loved her; and be it | ||||||
5 | further
| ||||||
6 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
7 | presented to the family of Alice Tregay as an expression of our | ||||||
8 | deepest sympathy.
