1 | SENATE RESOLUTION
| ||||||
2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened | ||||||
3 | to learn of the death of Donald Hacker "Don" Scherwat, who | ||||||
4 | passed away on on March 10, 2020; and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, Don Scherwat was born in Chicago to Josephine and | ||||||
6 | Bill Scherwat on September 15, 1927; he graduated from Senn | ||||||
7 | High School and the University of Illinois, where he was a | ||||||
8 | member of the Alpha Tau Omega fraternity and was captain of the | ||||||
9 | swimming team; he served in the U.S. Navy in World War II | ||||||
10 | aboard the LST 1026 in the Pacific; and
| ||||||
11 | WHEREAS, Don Scherwat began work as a teacher in District | ||||||
12 | 64 in North Chicago and was drafted into the U.S. Army during | ||||||
13 | the Korean War; he served in Japan, playing the trombone in the | ||||||
14 | band, welcoming dignitaries off the plane, and playing in | ||||||
15 | honky tonk bars at night; and

16 | WHEREAS, Don Scherwat returned to his teaching career and | ||||||
17 | was soon offered the job of business manager for District 64, | ||||||
18 | where he spent his entire career; and
| ||||||
19 | WHEREAS, Don Scherwat retired and spent his days at the | ||||||
20 | Bonnie Brook Golf Course selling golf balls and fishing in | ||||||
21 | Iron River, Wisconsin whenever he could; he moved to Florida |

1 | in 2007 after the passing of Rosemary and met the second love | ||||||
2 | of his life, Annie Yates; and
| ||||||
3 | WHEREAS, Don Scherwat was an expert swimmer; he worked as | ||||||
4 | a lifeguard on Lake Michigan at the Chicago beaches, and his | ||||||
5 | love of water continued with a 60-year fishing tradition, the | ||||||
6 | Skal Cup Memorial Day fishing tournament, which carries on | ||||||
7 | through his grandsons; he treasured his friendships, | ||||||
8 | especially a group of lifelong friends who called themselves | ||||||
9 | the Lucky Club and played golf and had raucous holiday parties | ||||||
10 | together; and
| ||||||
11 | WHEREAS, Don Scherwat played competitive volleyball into | ||||||
12 | his 60s with men half his age; he was honored by the AARP for | ||||||
13 | 20 years of volunteer tax preparation; he was also a | ||||||
14 | prize-winning gardener; and
| ||||||
15 | WHEREAS, Don Scherwat was preceded in death by his wife, | ||||||
16 | Rosemary (Musso); his parents; his brother, Bob Scherwat; and | ||||||
17 | his sister, Carole Muret; and
| ||||||
18 | WHEREAS, At the time of his death, Don Scherwat was | ||||||
19 | survived by his daughters, Tish (Ken) Pasiewicz and Mary Ellen | ||||||
20 | Montavon (Dennis Hildebrand); his grandsons, Mike and Scott | ||||||
21 | Ratkiewicz; his Florida soul mate, Annie Yates; and his nieces | ||||||
22 | and nephews; therefore, be it

1 | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL | ||||||
2 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of | ||||||
3 | Donald Hacker "Don" Scherwat and extend our sincere | ||||||
4 | condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved | ||||||
5 | him; and be it further
| ||||||
6 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
7 | presented to the family of Don Scherwat as an expression of our | ||||||
8 | deepest sympathy.
